Coastal Districts not Neglected in Budget – Yogish Shetty JD(S) Dist President

Udupi: The Udupi district JD(S) president Yogish Shetty Kaup on Tuesday, July 17, said that chief minister H D Kumaraswamy has presented a good budget by continuing all the schemes announced by the previous Siddaramaiah government.

Speaking at a press meet held at the Press Club, Udupi, he said, “The Congress government had earmarked a sizeable amount for the development of the coastal districts in the previous budget and this budget was the continuation of the previous budget.” Siddaramaiah government had in its last budget announced many proposals for the development of the coastal region and these proposals would be continued by the present government”.

Replying to the protest by the fishermen community against HDK, Yogish Shetty said, “The protesters did not even understand English but held placards. This was a planned protest against Kumaraswamy by the BJP. The previous government had announced many programmes for the community and that would be continued by this government. The previous government had approved the construction of a bridge-cum-barrage across the Netravathi connecting Adyarkatte, off the National Highway 75, and Harekala, near Mangalore University. Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had earmarked Rs 174 crore in the budget for this work. The loans provided by the fishermen cooperative societies to fishermen would be made interest-free and the previous budget has allotted Rs 2.5 crore to provide 35 mm square meshed nets in the cod end, free of cost to 2,500 trawl boats at Rs 10,000 each for this purpose. It is a good budget. Whatever the previous government led by Siddaramaiah promised in the last budget will be continued”.

“This is a budget with more focus on farmers’ welfare and it was announced with all financial disciplines. It is a historic and bold move that the government has announced the loan waiver to the tune of Rs 2 lakh. The farm loan waiver has been announced in all financial disciplines,” he said.

On criticism by BJP MLA’s that Coastal districts have been ignored by the government, Yogish Shetty said, “Kumaraswamy knows the situation of the Coastal districts. He had done more during his stint as a Chief Minister in 20 months than what BJP chief ministers had done in 5 years. He defended the 2 percent hike in taxes on petrol and diesel to mobilize resources for the crop loan waiver. A section of the society is unable to tolerate everyone contributing 10 paise each to help the farmer in distress,” he said, slamming those running a vicious campaign against fuel hike. HDK has announced Rs 34,000 crore crop loan waiver. It is a very sad part that some people find wrong in helping the farmer community”.

The chief minister will visit the district personally and discuss the demands of the coastal districts. Before that the state fisheries minister Venkat Rao Nada Gowda will also visit Udupi district on July 18 and 19 and discuss the demands of the fishermen community, he said.
