Complaints on Illegal Parking & Rude Behaviour of City Bus Crew during Phone-In-Programme

Mangaluru : Just like other Friday’s phone-in programmes, today’s callers had no new issues other than the same problems- Week after week, it seems like the citizens have the same kind of problems that they are facing with traffic menace and other MCC neglected issues, when they call with their grievances during the Phone-In programme handled by the Police Commissioner. This morning, callers highlighted inconvenience owing to haphazard parking, bad footpaths, rash and negligence bus drivers, rude behaviour of city bus conductors, buses skipping regular services, illegal parking by two-wheelers etc etc.

In the absence of the newly appointed Police Commissioner of Mangaluru P S Harsha, who will be taking charge this afternoon at 3 pm, Hanumantharaya IPS DCP (Law & Order), who will take charge as SP of Davangere soon took calls from the citizens, joined by Lakshmi Ganesh.K KSPS DCP (Crime & Traffic) – nearly 25 complaints were made during the Phone-In programme, on Friday, 9 August 2019.

One caller said that buses don’t ply on their routes regularly putting them in hardship, for which DCP said he will take action. Other grievances heard by the DCP from the callers were : Two-wheeler riders are speeding, without helmets, some riding triple, and some have LED lights which are bright creating inconveniences for the oncoming vehicles; Speeding buses on route to Ullal from Pumpwell ( bus numbers 42, 44 ) are safety hazard for pedestrians and smaller vehicles; Petty shops are seen selling cigarettes and tobacco products in the public, and also close to educational institutions; Street vendors are creating nuisance for motorists as well as commuter; stray dogs are a menace for commuters and motorists.

“If there is a ban on plastics, then why are they allowing flex hoardings/banners to put up in the city; Trade Centre-opposite to Hotel Goldfinch on Bunts Hostel road has occupied space for their parking purposes, surrounded by chains-which is causing inconveniences for pedestrians waiting for the buses; On Bejai New Road-Anegundi, a cab operator with his business in a commercial complex opposite to Bharati Apartments has been parking their Innova cars along the stretch of the road between 7.30 am-10.30 am and from 4 pm -8 pm, thereby causing nuisance for the public and other motorists; Vehicles are still seen overcrowded with school children;”

“The conductor of KA 19 C 4707 many a times is not issuing tickets, and if questioned, is rude with his reply; many a times service buses coming from Udupi to Mangaluru, who are suppose to drop the passengers at State Bank as final stop, are now dropping passengers at old bus stand causing inconveniences tom passengers especially when it rains; Lady Hill Circle until Alake stretch lack street lighting; many city buses have foot-board too high, which makes it hard for seniors while entering and alighting the bus; need a bus shelter near PVS circle; were among other complaints.

These are among the many grievances that the citizens called in and requested the DCP to take action- and in reply DCP Hanumantharaya assured them of quick action from his side if the problems belong to the police dept- other issues will be communicated with MCC or other departments to solve the problems. He also promised to launch a special drive to clear encroachment of roads and pavements. Action will be taken against buses that do not follow lane discipline, he said. He also said that in the wake of Muslim Bakrid feast (Tuesday) next week, DC has issued orders that action will be taken against those who create trouble, and also those who indulge in illegal cattle trafficking- and that police force will be in full action to maintain law and order

Manjunath Shetty- ACP-Traffic;Balakrishna K- Assistant Sub Inspector CCRB; Guruduth Kamath- Traffic Inspector South police station, Mohan Kottari- Police Inspector North; Vinay A Gaonkar- ACP-CCRB; Gopalkrishna Bhat- Traffic Inspector East; Purshotham – Police Head Constable, and Rajavarma Ballal, president of Bus Owner’s Association were present during the phone-in programme.
