  • Compound Wall Crashes on Kadri-Alvares Road in the City- Area Corporator Manohar Shetty Responds Quick in clearing the debris and making other arrangements. Irrespective of which party the corporators belong to, but I can say that among all the Corporators that Kadri Ward had so far, Manohar Shetty has been the BEST, who immediately responses to any calls/complaints on civic issues made to him, and sees that the problem is taken care sooner or later- Such kind of corporators we need to solve civic issues in this Smart City-Mangaluru!

Mangaluru: The monsoon season in the coastal region of DK/Mangaluru brings heavy rains from June to September or little behind that, which cause flooding and other damages like the walls collapsing, trees uprooting/crashing, etc etc. Building collapses are common as the rains weaken the foundations of poorly built structures. Following the retaining wall that collapsed at Essel Heights apartments in Derebail, early this morning at around 6.30 am, a private wall belonging to Alban P Farias Family on Kadri Alvares Road came crashing down, with debris scattered on most of the road. The owner of the house Mrs Jasmine Farias made a call to the corporator early in the morning, and area ward corporator Manohar Shetty, without wasting any time was at the spot by 6.45 am.

Speaking to Team Mangalorean, Mrs J Farias said, “This is the first time that our compound wall has collapsed, which was built around 35 years ago, in this property of our ancestors which is over a century. Due to heavy rains during the last two days might have caused this wall collapse, but I am happy that no one was injured. I am extremely grateful to our area corporator for responding to my call made to him early in the morning, and he was here in no time to take care of the situation, and he arranged a bunch of his team members to clear the debris fallen on the street. My heartfelt thanks to him and his team for their quick efforts”.

Corporator Manohar Shetty speaking to Team Mangalorean said, “Due to heavy rains last night had resulted in this compound wall crashing down. And also that the roots of a huge tree very adjacent to the wall, might have damaged the foundation of the wall, because many times tree roots can also be a major cause of foundation trouble, resulting in such incidents. Also that the city has witnessed incessant rainfall over the past few days, could be also one more reason for the wall to tumble. I have requested Mrs Farais to cut down the tree, to avoid further damages to them or the public, for which she has obliged to do soon. My job is to make sure the street is cleared of debris, whereas repair and expenses incurred in replacing the collapsed wall is the responsibility of the party since it is private property. Glad that no one was injured or any damage to public property”.

In Mangaluru, we see or hear about house walls, compound walls or retaining walls collapsing, during monsoon season. One of the worst affected parts of a home during the monsoons are the walls of your home or the compound walls. Monsoons are by far one of the most exciting seasons of the year when you can sit in the balcony of your house and watch the raindrops kiss the surface of the earth. However, there is no denying the fact that this season causes the maximum damage to your den or property. One of the worst affected with the downpour, are the walls of your house or compound.

A renowned civil engineer speaking to Team Mangalorean on the safety of home walls, which are quite old, said, The moisture that collects within the wall, remains even after the monsoon season. Hence, walls repainted afterwards are still prone to damage. It is ideal to avoid the above hassles and opt to get the painting of your walls done much prior to the setting in of the monsoons. For the interiors of your house, ensure that there is cross-ventilation in your home. This will keep humidity levels in check and get rid of that feeling of dampness. One of the most important factors to be kept in mind to protect the walls from peeling is choosing the right kind of exterior paint. It prevents rainwater and moisture from entering the concrete structure. Even if the damage is done and you are dealing with damp walls that are peeling and blistering, you need not fret. There are ways in which a damaged wall can be repaired.

To repair a damaged wall, the cracks should be filled with modified waterproof mortar and sealed. The same polymer can be used to seal the joints in the pipes that carry the rainwater. If there are any damaged wall tiles, they should be immediately replaced to prevent water seeping. All loose plaster must be removed from the wall. One should ensure proper curing time post the repairs so that when re-plastering is done, the cracks are bridged and the surface is smooth for painting. Fungus-affected areas need separate treatment. Walls that appear damp on the outside should not be ignored as the dampness could have seeped in. In order to check the dampness in the wall, a moisture metre is used to scan wall surfaces. So, the next time you are planning to get your walls painted before the monsoons, opt for specialised paints that are modified with silicon and which have high water repellency. You will be able to enjoy the downpour without worries then.
