Connecting People to Nature! Taj Gateway & Govt.ITI mark ‘World Environment Day’

Mangaluru: “Connecting People to Nature”, the theme for World Environment Day 2017, implores us to get outdoors and into nature, to appreciate its beauty and its importance, and to take forward the call to protect the Earth that we share.World Environment Day is the biggest annual event for positive environmental action and takes place every 5 June. World Environment Day is a day for everyone, everywhere. Since it began in 1972, global citizens have organized many thousands of events, from neighbourhood clean-ups to action against wildlife crime, to replanting forests. This year’s theme invites you to think about how we are part of nature and how intimately we depend on it. It challenges us to find fun and exciting ways to experience and cherish this vital relationship.

In recent decades, scientific advances, as well as growing environmental problems such as global warming, are helping us to understand the countless ways in which natural systems support our own prosperity and well-being. Billions of rural people around the world spend every working day ‘connected to nature’ and appreciate full well their dependence on natural water supplies and how nature provides their livelihoods in the form of fertile soil. They are among the first to suffer when ecosystems are threatened, whether by pollution, climate change or over-exploitation. Nature’s gifts are often hard to value in monetary terms. Like clean air, they are often taken for granted, at least until they become scarce.

Like every year, this year too, Hotel Taj Gateway-Mangaluru and Government ITI for Women-Kadri Hills, Mangaluru celebrated “World Environment Day” (WED) on 5th June 2017, 11am at ITI premises On this day, an awareness programme on the importance of sustainability and on WED, for the students of this I.T.I.through power point presentation was conducted; Two saplings were also planted in the ITI campus; and Initiated an undertaking from the students of this Institute for a personal challenge aimed at formulating a new habit towards creating a greener planet.

The programme began with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer song, followed by welcome address by Shivakumar-lecturer at ITI. Addressing the gathering Roopa Bangera said, “While we are observing the World Environment Day today, but the practice should not stop this day, instead carried forward everyday to see that we care for a green environment by planting trees/saplings. It is sad to note that trees are cut to give way for roads and buildings. To protect the environment, we need to keep our surroundings clean. People of Mangaluru should join in the Swachh Mangaluru campaign in keeping the city clean. We should also think of rain water harvesting, and not waste water when not needed. We all can make a difference in the society by working together to have a clean and green environment” Peter Nirmal also stressed the need for conservation of energy, where he said that we should conserve water, fuel, power etc.

Ravi Kumar Peter Nirmal also stressed the need for conservation of energy, where he said that we should conserve water, fuel, power etc. Ravi Kumar Holla, and A Balakrishna also spoke about environment. The programme was compered by Lokesh-lecturer at ITI, who also proposed the vote of thanks. It was indeed a kind gesture of Krishnappa P- a local environmentalist, who had come to the programme with bunch of save the environment signs, and also recited a few environmental quotes, which was repeated after him by the students and guests.

In conclusion, it is nice to note that World Environment Day (WED) which is United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment is supported by organizations like Hotel Taj Gateway and Govt. ITI for Women. By observing WED, it will like a ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet. The year’s WED theme is aimed at the well-being of humanity, the environment, and the functioning of the economy, ultimately depend upon the responsible management of the planet’s natural resources.Every Action Counts- WED is the opportunity for everyone to realize the responsibility to care for the Earth and to become agents of change. Let’s do it for the betterment of environment.
