Cops Should be Strict Always, and NOT Just during Road Safety Week?

Mangaluru: While the Road Safety Week (RSW) which commenced on 12 January and ends today (18 January) with a valedictory function to be held at Police Samudaya Bhavan- Mangaluru, citizens might have observed the traffic cops along with their seniors in full action, nailing motorists who have been violating traffic rules. But their duties should not stop today, as the Road Safety Week ends, instead they should be strict throughout the year, without indulging in corruption, discrimination, political influence etc. As always we have noticed that once the Road Safety week ends, the traffic cops are back to their normal behaviour-like talking on their mobiles, or hiding behind the petty shops or trees etc.

But this year, I have noticed that the Traffic Police have done a marvelous job in bringing road safety awareness among the motorists and pedestrians – and also they have been strict with those who violated the Traffic rules and regulations. Two-wheeler riders have been the target of the traffic cops during this week. The fear of being caught for not wearing a helmet has almost dissipated among two-wheeler riders in the city. However, the city traffic police are back on their feet to pull the leash once again on erring riders, and many riders were slapped with fines for not wearing helmet, including the pillion riders.

However, the traffic police tried to revive their efforts once again during the RSW. Each area was given a mandate for the week to promote awareness – and some of them had interesting ideas for the safety of motorists. During the Road Safety Week several programmes were focused on inculcating road safety values in vehicle owners, as well as schoolchildren, will be held across the State, as part of the Road Safety Week being observed by the Transport Department. Since majority of the accidents are caused by two-wheelers which constitute 78 percent of all vehicles registered in Karnataka, awareness on safe riding was brought to the attention of the riders.

Objectives and the aim of celebrating the campaign road safety week is to promote the road safety measures in the community, schools, colleges, work places, on roads and etc; To decrease and completely remove out the road accidents, road accident death and injury cases by applying the road safety measures; To encourage all the travelers to follow the traffic rules and wear helmets and seat belts while driving; To implement the new preventative measures which are proved to lessen the risk of road accidents, death or injury; To aware the people about the speed limit of the vehicles to prevent road accidents; To maintain the speed and required distance from other vehicles; and To aware people that do not drink, do not drive when tired and do not use phones or radios while driving.

Team Mangalorean extends heartfelt thanks the Traffic police, traffic wardens and home guards who work very hard to ease the traffic in the city. Safety is not just a programme, it is a way of life- you have all done a great job- keep up the good work that you are entrusted with- and continue doing your duties with dedication, commitment and honesty without any corruption, bribe, partiality, political influence etc. You all did a great job during the Road Safety Week, make this ‘RSW 2017’-an example to follow all year long?
