Cops Tow Junk Vehicles on Bibi Alabi Rd to Clear of Scrap

Mangaluru: If you had passed by Bibi Alabi Road in the City couple days, you might have come across hoards of vehicle scrap piled high, including junk vehicles parked on the roadside. Not anymore- with the traffic police conducting a raid on this stretch of the road, have towed all these junk cars. Over the years, scrap dealers had occupied the road While it was strenuous to drive along Bibi Alabi Road in the Central Business District with hoards of scrap vehicle dealers opening their shops right on the road, the Mangaluru city police cleared encroachment on footpaths and the road.

Since about a week, the police have been carrying out similar drives across the city, particularly, on vehicle garages and workshops that had encroached on public spots making driving and walking difficult. This drive was conducted jointly by the Mangaluru North and Traffic West Police to clear Bibi Alabi Road of the tag “scrap road”. Speaking to Team Mangalorean Assistant Commissioner of Police (Central) Udaya M. Nayak said, ” We have been eyeing on this situation for a long time, where many scrap dealers had been dismantling vehicles by parking old vehicles on the road. The road space had shrunk posing challenges to drivers and pedestrians to negotiate. There were frequent complaints from motorists and the public, and the police had to act after the dealers ignored earlier warnings. We will continue such kind of raids in other areas where junk vehicles obstruct vehicular or pedestrian movement”.

The police commenced the clearance drive using a towing vehicle, and during the process, Bibi Alabi Road was closed to traffic during the drive, which went on for nearly two hours. Nearly 10 old vehicles were towed from the spot and unloaded at the CR Police ground, near the Mangaluru North police station. Presently locals in that area have been clearing the street of debris of junk vehicle parts.

Saleem, a member of ‘Bibi Alabi Rd Gujri Association’ said, ” We have all joined together to clean this place as part of Swachh Mangaluru. Within a day or two, this area will look clean for the most part of it. It was a good move by the police to tow all the junk vehicles that were sitting along the roadside for a long time, creating a nuisance to traffic movement”.
