Cordel Parishioners Launch Massive Clean Up Drive as part of ‘Swachh Mangaluru’

Mangaluru: Being a lazy Sunday, while most of the residents around the Kulshekar Vicinity were still in bed, while others were getting ready to attend the Sunday Mass-but a majority of the Parishioners belonging to the Cordel Parish (Kulshekar) woke up early on Sunday to participate in the FIRST Massive Clean-Up drive as part of “Swachh Bharath/Swachh Mangaluru” campaign, on 11 March 2018. Seems like it was a ‘Congratulations Gift” to their ward Corporator Bhasker K Moily who just got elected as the Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC)- who was invited as one of the guest for the event.

If you are just wondering how come the stretch of the road between Cordel Church – Jayashree Gate- Bikkarnakatta- and in that surrounding vicinity looks much “Cleaner and Better” than it was on Saturday 10 March- it was due to the hard work and tireless efforts put in by the parishioners of Cordel Church, and also the residents of that area, who joined in to clean-up the entire surroundings-which was just filthy being neglected all this time. Kudos and job well done to all these volunteers for their community service and making Kulshekar and surrounding vicinity look “Green and Clean”?.

The Abhiyan was inaugurated by MLA J R Lobo, along with newly elected MCC Mayor Bhasker K Moily, Fr Victor Machado- Cordel Church Parish Priest, Santhumeer Monteiro- Secretary of Cordel parish Council; Loy Noronha- VP of the Parish Council; and Fr Santhosh- Asst Parish Priest of Cordel Church. Prior to the launch/inauguration the formal programme with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer led by the Sisters of Santa Cruz Convent-Kulshekar- followed by welcome address by Fr Victor Machado, where he said, ” As they say Cleanliness is next to Godliness”- you have all come here for a good cause to make this area tidy and garbage free. It is nice to see all of you waking up early and joined here in large numbers-this shows the unity, determination and enthusiasm shown by you all parishioners and our neighbours. Thank you for your support- you are all here to make a difference. Keep up the good work”.

Addressing the gathering, MLA J R Lobo said, “My sincere thanks for you for your initiative in taking up this Swachh Mangaluru project. While you are all come here with a motto to make Mangaluru look clean, you should also have a clean mind and heart, so that with cleanliness, we can also spread the message of love, harmony and peace in our city. Your efforts and dedication in this Abhiyan are very much appreciated, and keep up the good work that you are entrusted with. Your support and encouragement is always needed in the growth of the City, and also to keep it neat and clean- and environmentally friendly”.

MCC Mayor Bhasker K also addressing the gathering said, “Just like MLA J R Lobo said, along with cleanliness, we need to have a clean Mind and Heart, then only we can make a difference and bring a change in the society. I appreciate your support while I was your Corporator, now I look forward to your overwhelming support, love and encouragement during my tenure as your Mayor. Your participation in this cleanup drive is commendable and I extremely thank you for your support in this regard. Let us join together to make Mangaluru, a Clean and Green City of India. And we can do it with energetic and enthusiastic people like you”.

The massive clean-up drive started around 7.30 am and continued for hours-where the volunteers picked up garbage, swept the areas, burned leaves, removed illegal banners, etc etc. Volunteers from seniors to middle-aged to youth actively participated in this Swachh campaign- and they all sent a message to PM Modi, that Catholics too support His idea of Swachh Bharath- and also brought an awareness that Swachh Bharath Abhiyan should be taken up by everyone irrespective of caste or creed.

Keep up the true motivation and good civic sense, All Christians should make an effort to keep their surroundings clean at all times. What is the purpose of sending the message to the PM, who actually introduced Swaach Bharath scheme to avail revenue from a new tax, and in return give nothing in return to those volunteers involved in keeping Bharath Swaach Instead one should ask the PM how is the Swaach Bharath tax revenue being utilised,
