Couple Tie Knot Buddhist Style in Udupi

Udupi: The Udupi district Sunday, October 1 witnessed a Buddhist style marriage at the Sheshashyana Hall.

Udupi District Buddha Mahasabha general Secretary and also the Samaj Parivarthan Movement leader Manjunath V and Ambika S. fulfilled their dream of having a wedding in the Buddhist tradition.

On Sunday, the couple Manjunath son of Vasu Mestri and Susheela residents of Kelarkalabettu Vishnumoorthi Nagar of Udupi Taluk and Ambika daughter of Suresh and Parvathi residents of Sagar of Shivamogga district tied the knot in the presence of their friends and relatives at the Sheshashyana Hall Udupi in the Buddhist Style of marriage beginning with the exchange of garlands. S R Laxman Dammachari of Dakshina Kannada Baudha Mahasabha conducted the entire marriage rituals.

 Manjunath working as advocate in Udupi and also active member of the Dalit movement, while Ambika has completed here graduation. Both were inspired by Dr Ambedkar, they decided to enter into wedlock according to the Buddhist tradition. Manjunath converted to Buddhism in 2014 and Ambika on Sunday. Mantras were chanted in the Pali language. Buddist Monk Bodhidatti Bantheji of Mysuru graced the occasion.

According to Buddhist marriage, the rituals start with the recitation of the Tisarana, Pancasila and Vandana in Pali language. After the recitation, the bride and the groom light the candles and incense sticks and offer flowers to Lord Buddha’s image. At the end, only the parents or the assembly would recite the Mangala Sutra to offer their blessings for the couple.
