Court Acquits Former BD Convener Mahendra Kumar in Church Attack Case

Mangaluru: The former Convener of Bajrang Dal Mahendra Kumar has been acquitted in the Church attack case.

On September 14, 2008, around 15 people barged into the Adoration Monestry at Milagres and damaged the statue of Jesus Christ breaking its left hand. Statues in other churches in Mangaluru, Beltangady, Bantwal and Udupi district were also destroyed and the Holy Sacrament was desecrated. After the church attack, Mahendra Kumar had called a press meet at Hotel Woodlands and supported the attack.

In this connection, a case was filed against Mahendra Kumar and the then police Inspector Venkatesh Prasanna had arrested him.

The judge in Second JMFC Court acquitted Mahendra Kumar from all the charges. Rajesh Amtady contested the case in favour of Mahendra Kumar and argued that Mahendra Kumar had no intention to create communal hatred between Hindus and Christians but had spoken about conversion during the press meet.

On February 5, the second JMFC court judge acquitted Mahendra Kumar of all charges. Five years ago all the others accused in Church attack were acquitted.
