Court finds Father Guilty of Poisoning Two Children in Byndoor

Kundpaur: The Kundapur additional sessions court here on Thursday, December 3 found the father guilty in the death of two children by poisoning them at Ganganadu near Byndoor.

The final hearing was held in the district and sessions court here on Thursday, January 3. The Judge will announce the quantum of punishment on January 7.

The accused Shankaranarayana Hebbar (49) had poisoned his family and himself consumed the poison at Ganganadu on October 16, 2016.

The children, Ashwin Kumar Hebbar (16) and Aishwarya Hebbar (14) died, while the parents were rushed to the hospital by neighbours. Their mother Mahalakshmi (37) was discharged after treatment and a case was registered in the Byndoor Police Station.

When the Byndoor police started investigating, they suspected the father and registered cases of murder and attempt to murder against him. During investigations, the police recovered a 21-page note purportedly written by Shankaranarayana in which he admitted to administering the poison. The note highlights Shankaranayarana’s relationship with a woman and that he was depressed the woman had married someone else. When he expressed his intention to die, his wife and children too had said that they didn’t want to live without him.

After treatment, Shankaranarayana was arrested by the Byndoor Police. Out of 43 witnesses listed, 17 were examined by the court. The accused and his wife were eyewitnesses for the incident. The then Byndoor police circle inspector, Raghav Padil, had filed the charge sheet. District assistant public prosecutor represented the prosecution.
