CP Anupam Agrawal Inaugurates National Road Safety Week 2024

Mangaluru: The National Road Safety Week was inaugurated at the TMA Pai Convention hall here on January 11.

The programme began with an invocation. Police Inspector Ramesh welcomed the gathering. DCP Crime and Traffic Dinesh Kumar delivered the keynote address and said, that every year 600 to 800 accidents take place in our district injuring more than 900 and killing 100 to 125 people. Road accidents are caused mainly due to rash and negligent driving. Sometimes, parents allow their minor children to drive or ride a vehicle which is a crime. We should teach our children about road safety. There should be responsible driving etiquette while driving or riding. Every year we organise various programmes related to road safety to bring awareness among the students. We give priority to pedestrians’ safety and safe driving. I urge everyone to drive safe and create a safe society”.

The programme was inaugurated by the police commissioner Anupam Agrawal by lighting the traditional lamp along with the differently abled children from St Agnes School and Sanidya. Later the children were felicitated with shawls and Chess boards were handed over to both institutions.

Traffic signs were unveiled on the occasion by Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal and other dignitaries on the dais.

ACP Traffic Geetha Kulkarni presented a PPT on road accidents. Later addressing the gathering, she said, “Mangaluru is a beautiful city and a vibrant economy with educational excellence and robust connectivity that underscores its pivotal role in India’s Growth narrative. With a thriving banking sector, that delivers a trade portfolio and a commitment to education and innovation, the city stands as a beacon of progress. We should understand the reason for accidents and learn to avoid them. Our priority should be safety first, we should avoid the use of mobiles while driving or riding, driving/riding the wrong way also causes accidents. While driving or riding we should always think of safety. Save your life and save others’ lives too”, she said.

Addressing the gathering Vice-chancellor of Yenepoya University Dr Vijay Kumar said, “In a democracy, you don’t obey anyone but the law. So law is superior and we all should obey the law. When we were small we were scared of the police department because our parents were scaring us saying that they would take us to the police if we made any mistakes. Once you follow the rules, you need not be afraid of anyone. Always remember one who does not know how to obey will never learnt to command. When you are young, you should learn discipline. I urge all the students to follow the traffic rules and create a healthy and safe society”.

Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal in his presidential address said, “Every year we organize various programmes in schools and colleges to create awareness among the students about road safety so that we can save lives. Charity begins from home, likewise, safety should begin from home. As parents, we should ensure that we will not allow our minor children to drive or ride. If parents teach their children to wear helmets and follow traffic rules, we can avoid many accidents. Prevention is better than cure. Likewise, we should take all the measures, before any tragedy occurs. We have only one life and once we lose, we cannot get it back. So follow traffic rules and be safe”.

Police Commissioner Agrawal felicitated Traffic wardens for their selfless service. Deserving traffic police were also felicitated on the occasion.

R J Prasanna and Akshatha Shenoy compered the programme. ACP CAR P Umesh KSPS, Regional Transport officer Shridhar K Mallad, District Secretary of Bharat Scouts and Guides M G Kaje and Dr Sudhakar were also present.
