Cyclist’s Say ‘no’ to drugs through Cyclothon

Udupi: Hundreds of cyclists along with the district superintendent of police Laxman Nimbargi, police officials and medical practitioners, participated in a Cycle Jatha organized by Udupi district Police in association with Udupi District working Journalist’s Association and Udupi Press Club as a part of an awareness campaign against substance abuse here on Sunday, August 26.

The Cycle Jatha was flagged off by the district superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi along with Badagabettu Co-operative Society General Manager Indrali Jayakar Shetty at the Mission Compound.

The Cycle Rally passed through Badagabettu Co-operative Society, Old Taluk Office, Diana Hotel, Ajjarkadu, Brahmagiri, Ambalpadi, Karavali By-pass, Nittur, Ambagilu, Santhekatte Gundibailu, Kalasanka, Kadiyali, MGM, Indrali, Kunjibettu, City Bus-stand, Bannanje, SP Office and finally culminated at the Mission Compound. The Cyclists completed the 25 km route in one and half hours with great spirits. Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi, ASP Kumarchandra, DySP Kumaraswamy and Dinesh Kumar also pedalled the cycle and encouraged other participants. More than 250 cyclists participated in the Rally.

Speaking on the occasion Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi said, “Cycling is the best and cheapest form of exercise to keep you healthy, people must be encouraged to adopt such modes of transport. Using a bicycle is easy, cheap, convenient, healthy and fun. Under the leadership of Udupi district police along with Udupi district Journalist’s Association and Udupi Press Club various awareness programmes like Walkathon, Cyclothon, Marathon, Short Movie making competitions, interactions with former drug addicts, Cartoon fest and Sand sculpture awareness on Drug abuse, etc are being held.

He also urged people, particularly the youth, not just to stay away from drugs but also fight drug addiction and substance abuse. “This is essential to build a healthy society. “Youth are vulnerable to addiction and should say no to drugs. They should also educate their peers to stay away from drugs,” he said.

The Udupi Media to join hands with the people of the district to create awareness on Drug Abuse. “The Udupi district police feel proud as they have joined hands for a good cause. I have worked in many districts but this is for the first time I have seen such a dedicated team of journalists in Udupi district. I would like to thank them for their efforts in making the programme successful,” he said.

Udupi district working Journalist’s Association secretary Santhosh Saralebettu, Press Club Convener Nagaraj Rao, ASP Kumarchandra, DySP Udupi Kumaraswamy, DySP Kundapur Dinesh Kumar and others were present.
