Dangerous Cable Chamber Near Hampankatta Signal Poses Threat to Two-Wheeler Riders

Mangaluru: A hazardous cable chamber situated in the middle of the road near Jos Alukkas on K.S. Rao Road has emerged as a significant danger for vehicle riders, particularly two-wheeler users. The chamber, which is set below the road level, has been the site of numerous accidents, with reports indicating that many riders have sustained injuries after their vehicles encountered the chamber’s edge. A particularly alarming incident involved a pregnant woman, who fell off her two-wheeler and was subsequently taken to the hospital by locals.

Local residents have expressed grave concerns, noting that at least one person falls and gets injured at this location daily. Additionally, the chamber on the road leading towards the Hampankatta signal is in a state of disrepair, compounding the risk for unsuspecting riders. The chamber’s structure includes concrete slabs with iron rods embedded within them; however, one of the slabs has become loose, exposing a dangerously protruding iron rod. This condition poses a severe hazard, as two-wheeler wheels may easily get caught, leading to skidding and potential falls.

Onlookers, including local shopkeepers, have reported that when the road is clear, vehicles traveling at high speeds from Hampankatta can inadvertently catch their wheels in the chamber, resulting in accidents. Furthermore, the vicinity also serves as a U-turn point for vehicles coming from the city center, which increases the likelihood of two-wheeler riders falling due to their wheels getting caught on the edge of the uneven slab.

Similar cable chambers are found throughout Mangaluru, many of which are in comparable states of disrepair. The incessant sounds of vehicles crashing down onto these chambers serve as a stark reminder of the dangers they present. Local residents and shopkeepers have urged concerned officials and representatives to address this pressing safety issue, calling for immediate repairs to the chamber to ensure smoother traffic flow and enhance the safety of all road users.
