Datta Jayanti: Chikkamagaluru police seize 5 petrol bombs, arrest 13 persons
Chikkamagaluru: After the stone pelting and assault which were reported in Chikkamagaluru during the Datta Jayanti the district police seized 5 petrol bombs and arrested 13 persons.
Speaking to Mangalorean.com Chikkamagaluru SP Annamalai said that we found 5 used liquor bottles that were filled with petrol and had a wick that could be used as a petrol bomb in the Tamil Colony. After the incident we have arrested 32 persons and registered 4 cases. Out of the 32 persons 13 were involved in the Petrol bomb case. All the arrested are between the age of 15 to 18, and residing in the Tamil Colony. These type of Petrol bombs are usually being used in Kerala and Tamilnadu, he added.
Following a complaint from Mechanic Annappa that a few members of a particular community had pelted stones while he was walking on KM Road, the police had arrested 19 persons, of whom four were minors.
In connection with a assault reported at Uppalli, the police have arrested three persons. Following a complaint registered by auto driver Wajid that a few members of another community had assaulted him while he was returning home from Dattapeeta, the police have arrested 15 persons and seized a few vehicles.
The police have filed a suo motu case for trying to ransack the name board of tombs on the Dattapeeta premises.
The SP said that a few youths, on December 3, hurled stones at police when they were on duty. During search operations, the police unearthed petrol bombs. The police have taken 15 persons into custody in this regard.
Recalling the incident on December 3, Tension had prevailed for some time at the Datta Peeta as a devotee jumped into the restricted area and placed the ‘Bhagawadwaja.’ The police rushed to the spot and pulled him out of the restricted area. This led to chaos at the site. In the melee, all the barricades placed at the site came down. Devotees also ransacked the name boards placed at the tombs in the restricted area of the Datta peeta.
A few of the devotees had sneaked saffron shawls into the restricted area as well.
Chikkamagalur SP K Annamalai and his team brought the situation under control.
