Manipal: The bronze statue of Dr B R Ambedkar at a cost of Rs 9.5 lakh was unveiled in front of the district complex Rajathadri Manipal here, on April 16.
The programme began with an invocation, Premnath district social welfare officer welcomed the gathering. Deputy commissioner of Udupi district Dr R Vishal unveiled the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar.
Dalit community leaders lauded the efforts of DC Dr Vishal for implementing various projects for SC/ST in the district. They urged the deputy commissioner to rename at least 5 roads as Dr Ambedkar roads and demanded to hand over at least 5 acres of land to the Dalit community.
In his message DC Vishal said that the district administration is committed to the welfare of Dalits and other oppressed classes in the society. He promised that he will give priority to sanction the welfare schemes for Dalits at the district level.
Priyanka Mary Francis CEO Udupi Zilla panchayat, Chennabasappa Additional DC, all district level officers were present.
