DDSHS Stages Protest demanding Justice for Rohit Vemula

Mangaluru: The Dalita Damanitara Swabhimani Horata Samiti staged a protest in front of the DC office on January 17, demanding justice to Rohith Chakravarti Vemula a Ph.D. student at the University of Hyderabad who committed suicide on January 17, 2016.

Addressing the protesters social activist Suresh Bhat Bakrebail said, “Rohit Vemula’s death is not a suicide but is a murder in the name of the caste system. Rohit was a brilliant student who was pursuing Ph.D. in his own capacity and on merit and not on the reservation as alleged. If Rohit would have completed Ph.D. the country would have been benefitted but the caste system is such in our country that the Dalits have been discriminated. Rohit Vemula’s death is discrimination against the Dalits”.

Suresh Bhat further said, “After Modi came to power, atrocities against Dalits have increased. To fool the people, they garland the statue of Dr Ambedkar and on the another hand they snatch the rights of the Dalits. We need to continue our fight against discrimination, if we stop now, Dalits will not get justice”.

Member of the Dalita Damanitara Swabhimani Horata Samiti Raghuveer Suterpet said, “One year ago Rohit Vemula died because of discrimination but spiritually he is with us and is strengthening us to fight against the atrocities. Political leaders organizing programmes for their benefit in the college and university campuses which should be stopped. Any political or government programme which will create problems for the students should not be allowed inside the campus. We demand justice for Rohit Vemula. We will continue our fight against caste-based discrimination against students in the universities, colleges and schools belonging to the lower caste”.

Member of the Dalita Damanitara Swabhimani Horata Samiti Ashok and others were also present.
