Death toll of monkeys goes up to 16 in Udupi dist

Mangaluru/Shivamogga: Monkeys continue to die mysteriously with five more deaths being reported in Kundapur taluk on Saturday.

Sources in Kundapur taluk health office told DH that mysterious deaths of monkeys were reported from Kandlur, Belwee, Kodagi, Brahmavar and Byndoor.

“The death of a monkey in Kukkenalli was not taken into account as it was killed and burnt by villagers,” informed sources in Kundapur taluk health office.

Another monkey was found dead near Uddinamakki Marase in Kandlur gram panchayat limits, where the decayed carcass of a monkey was found on Friday.

Viscera collected

The viscera collected from four carcass were sent to Viral Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) in Shivamogga, Udupi District Health Officer Dr Rohini
said.

The viscera could not be collected from the decayed carcass in Kodagi as the monkey was suspected to have died three days ago. With the discovery of five more dead monkeys, the number of monkeys dying under mysterious circumstances increased to 16.

Dr Lata Nayak of Kandlur PHC conducted an awareness programme in Uddinamakki Marase on Saturday.

4 KFD suspected cases

Meanwhile, four persons in Aralagodu gram panchayat in Sagar taluk of Shivamogga district were admitted to KMC Hospital, Manipal, after they complained of KFD symptoms, on Saturday.

According to health department, Lolakshi, Spoorthi, residents of Mandavalli village, Lakshmamma, a resident of Kalamanji, Sharadamma of Sampa were suffering from fever for the past two days.

They were admitted to KMC hospital, Manipal. However, the report of blood samples is awaited.
