Death Trap? Open Pit in Middle of Kadri Road a Safety Hazard

Mangaluru: These days driving or riding on the City streets is kind of dangerous, for the fact due to lots of obstacles from increasing vehicles, unsafe road constructions, huge potholes, stray animals running around, etc etc and apart from many of these obstacles are incomplete drainage or road maintenance work. This report is pertaining to a dug up road near City Hospital, opposite to Susheela Nikethan Apartments on Kadri Road- Mangaluru- and this spot if left unattended for over two weeks now. Seems like the problem of water pipe or drainage issue has been fixed, but the labourers have left behind a huge pit. The only thing that is blocking this spot is a yellow barricade, without any reflectors on it.

I am not sure whether the work was undertaken for the Susheela Nikethan Apartments or the nearby houses/flats or general public- whatever the case, why have the MCC workers or private contractors not filled up the pit, which is a safety hazard for the motorists, especially at night. This is a busy road with private buses plying locally at high speed, including also the service buses plying between Mangalore and Karkala/Moodbidri- also plying under rash conditions- and in between these monster buses, are the light vehicles plying on this stretch of the road. And now this obstacle sitting right in the middle of the road for days is indeed a dangerous safety hazard for the motorists.

Why is MCC turning a blind eye? They will only wake up and rectify the issue, once someone gets injured or when a life is lost. Do the city officials ever bother to look at the civic work that has been taken-up-I guess not. So we have all these incomplete and hazardous streets. Another major problem facing the motorists/pedestrians is that when the roads are dug for concreting or drainage/or pipeline work the city’s streets take a severe beating. Not just streets, even footpath in city’s main thoroughfares have vanished pushing the pedestrians into direct confrontation with the city’s killer public transport system. This education hub is now like a middle-aged bachelor, with the government and MCC trying to dress him up with all sorts of cosmetics while the vital aspects are being sidelined. With half the city being dug up for one or the other reason the traffic appear to be going haywire while the pedestrians are scampering for safety.

Mangaluru has a dubious reputation for being the most unsafe city for motorists, as well as pedestrians. Nobody has investigated into that so there is no official document available for gauging the level of discomfort for the motorist/pedestrian but the way the city is dug up at present it is evident to the naked eye the violation of safety of pedestrians. School children, young and old folks, ladies and gentlemen are the most susceptible. Walking around the dug up areas is endangering their safety. It is a carnage out there.

What is the condition of the streets that you trudge on? Just look at some of the perils of driving/riding or even walking on Mangaluru’s streets. If Mangaluru’s streets could talk, they’d have many a tale to tell. These incomplete drainage/pipeline/road work are posing a danger to human life, including the spot opposite to Susheela Nikethan Apartments (Near City Hospital-Kadri Road). While some could claim that these have sent people to the hospital with injuries, some others would state that they have claimed lives! Even today, when there is so much conversation about road safety, and despite citizens being at the fore of this conversation, many roads are very hazardous. Or even if they are present, they are not usable, either because of defects in the structure, or because somebody had decided to dig it for a minor drainage or pipeline, just like the one here on Kadri Road.

I only hope this report will reach the concerned authorities to take quick action in fixing this dangerous open pit, right in the middle of the concrete road, before any serious accident takes place. Just erecting a barricade with no proper safety guidelines will not serve the purpose. My humble request to the Mayor or MCC officials to rectify this issue at the earliest. Thank You!
