Dengue on the Rise! Nearly 500 Dengue Cases and 40 Fresh Ones Each Day Reported
Mangaluru: As they say “Better Late Than Never”, finally after 5 deaths, and nearly 500 cases of Dengue and malaria reported in DK/Mangaluru, the officials of District Administration and Mangaluru City Corporation have woken up to take preventive measures and also bring awareness on Dengue by putting up banners and hoardings pertaining to Dengue, announcement made over microphone using vans and auto-rickshaws, awareness jingles on radio and TV channels, and sending out Teams from the district administration to outsource reduction, drain cleaning, fogging, public buildings inspection and drain cleaning in areas. These preventive measures should have been undertaken well before the start on monsoons, and also crackdown on builders who had left behind stagnant water at their construction sites.
It is reported that about 30 cases have been confirmed through the Elisa test, and nearly 40 people were admitted to hospitals in Dakshina Kannada. According to a press release, 31 persons were admitted in private hospitals in Mangaluru, while one patient was admitted in Bantwal. A total of 500 persons have so far been tested positive for dengue since July 1. It is learnt that as part of the district administration’s dengue source reduction exercise, Mangaluru City Corporation officials on Wednesday collected a fine of Rs 65,000 from owners in whose premises mosquito was found breeding.
Corporation personnel collected Rs 10,000 each from owners of Rizwan Hotel building on N.G. Road, Mohtisham Complex Private Limited, Globalstar Realtors Private Limited in Attavar and D. Mart Commercial Complex on N.G Road. Among those from whom Rs 5,000 fine was collected included Ramanesh Builders, Shabir on S.L. Mathais Road, Isaq in Shanti Nilaya and Joshua on Balmatta New Road. Teams from the district administration on Wednesday carried outsource reduction, drain cleaning, fogging, public buildings inspection and drain cleaning in areas between Athena Hospital and Collector’s Gate, Milagres Church and Attavar, Kankanady Circle and Highland Cross Road, Sturrock Road, Attavar Katte and B.V. Road. In the meantime, MLA’s Vedavyas Kamath and Dr Bharath Shetty, and Minister U T Khader have called upon people to clear their premises of freshwater deposits where mosquitoes carrying dengue virus breed.
