Dharwad: In what is thought to be the largest catch in a single operation at a single spot in the state, the Lokayukta officials unearthed Rs 1.54 crore in cash from the house of an executive engineer of the rural drinking water and sanitation project.
Complaints had been received about Arjun Hanumant Badiger regarding irregularities in tender process, work management and harassment to the contractors at the time of settlement of bills and persistent demand for bribes at every stage. Besides, he is said to have violated the rules by appointing his own daughter with an MTech degree in his office to facilitate his plans.
During the raid on his residence, besides Rs 1,54,62,300 in cash, 678 gms gold and silverware weighing 1,700 gms found. The value of what was found in kind has not been ascertained as yet.
Lokayukta officials said that cases of irregularities in various projects had been reported and they had registered a suo motu case against Badiger on Apr 9. A case has been registered against him now. He was arrested and produced before the Lokayukta special court. He was sent to 14 days’ judicial custody.
