Discussion on Union Budget & State Budget 2018 at Sahyadri College
Mangaluru: Presentation and discussion on “Union Budget & State Budget- 2018” was organized by Department of Business Administration, Sahyadri College of Engineering & Management, Adyar, Mangalore on February 17, 2018. This programme analyzed the positive pushes of the government guided by the mission to strengthen agriculture, rural development, health, education, employment, industry and infrastructure sectors.
The major thrust area of the budget was to achieve over 8 % growth as manufacturing, services and exports back on good growth path. The budget session started with a short formal inauguration. During the Inaugural Ceremony, Dr Vishal Samartha, Director, Department of Business Administration, welcomed the gathering and stated that it was a platform for knowledge sharing wherein the financial information is converted to wisdom. She gave a brief glimpse of the college and elaborated on the basic premise behind organizing the Budget presentation by the First year MBA students.
The entire program was conducted in two sessions. The first session was dedicated to Union budget and the second session was on State budget. The students of MBA presented the “Union Budget & State Budget – 2018” covering distinct sectors viz. Education, Health Care & Social Welfare Programmes, Agriculture & Rural Development, Infrastructure & MSME. The panel consisted of subject experts – Dr. Radhakrishna Shetty, Head, Department of Economics, Sri Mahaveera College, Moodbidri, M N Pai, Chartered Accountant & Prof. Banu Prakash, Professor of Commerce, SDM college, Ujire who shared their views and added insights to the budget presentation.
During the deliberation M N Pai shared his view point on the current budget & also spoke on the hits and misses in various sectors. Dr. Radhakrishna specifically spoke on rural economy and agriculture. He said that the current budget is having a long term vision and the concentration was on Education, Health and Rural areas. He commented that the budget does not give focus on total infrastructure development of agriculture but has confined itself only to few specific areas of agriculture only. He appreciated the digitalization of agro marketing but he says it is still unreachable to the illiterate and ignorant small farmers.
He concluded by saying that Government has to frame permanent solutions for agro related problems. Prof. Banu Prakash talk was on Education & Health sectors. He stated that he current budget was above average & can be rated at 90 on a scale of 100. He enumerated on the various schemes in both the sectors and applauded the effort of the government for concentrating on grass root level problems.
