Dist Mahila Congress launches year-long Indira Gandhi Centenary celebrations
Udupi: Sacrifice of Indira Gandhi in preserving a united, diverse and an egalitarian India said Pramod Madhwaraj district minister in charge and also state minister for fisheries, sports and Youth Service.
He was speaking after inaugurating the year-long programmes to mark the centenary celebrations of former prime minister Indira Gandhi at the Town Hall on Saturday, March 11 organised by the district Mahila Congress.
Indira Gandhi had formulated and implemented several programmes for the welfare of the general public and also to build a strong nation. She had launched a 20-point programme and a series of other schemes to make the country strong, self-reliant and to improve production besides eradicating poverty and illiteracy.
She would be forever remembered for her welfare programmes and land reforms she implemented during her tenure for the benefit of the poor and the landless. She was always remembered as a strong and powerful woman. She has played a prominent role towards making India one fo the most developing countries in the world. Because of the 20 point programmes, she had implemented during her rule thousands of poor families were able to lead a life of dignity. The women’s party workers should create awareness among the Young generation on Indira Gandhi’s welfare programmes. Her programmes and contribution to the nation and its people should not be forgotten, he added.
Various women achievers including, Sarla Kanchan, Chandrika Shetty, Chandrika Kelkar, Dr Sunitha Shetty, Roshni Olivera, Appi Bai, Sundari Puttur, Shobha Kakkunje and others were honoured on the occasion.
