Mangaluru: The district youth Congress felicitated five Muslim youth on May 26, for their effort to rescue Nishanth who had jumped into the Netravati river to commit suicide at Panemangaluru on May 24.

On May 24, Nishanth from Kalladka jumped into the Netravati River in Panemangaluru. As Nishanth jumped into the river, Mohammed, Tousif, Zameer, Zahid and Arif P J, who were nearby without second thoughts, jumped into the river to save Nishanth. They succeeded in bringing Nishant to the river bank and tried their best to save his life, but Nishant had already breathed his last.

Everyone appreciated the youth who without thinking of their life, had jumped into the river to save Nishanth.

Later there was a Twitter war between Udupi – Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje and MLA of Ullal Constituency U T Khader in connection to the death of Nishnath and the five Muslim Youth for trying to save his life.

On May 26, under the leadership of District Youth Congress president Mithun Rai, a felicitation programme was held at the Congress Bhavan. Mithun Rai felicitated Mohammed, Tousif, Zameer, Zahid, and Arif P J with a Shawl, garland, fruits, and Rs 15000 cash as a token of appreciation.

Speaking to mangalorean.com Mithun Rai said, “During this COVID-19 Pandemic, people are hesitant even to go near others. But on May 24, these five youth set an example by jumping into the Netravati river to save Nishanth’s life. In our district, many are fighting in the name of religion but these five Muslim youth are role models to all of us. They did not think about their own life or the Eid celebrations, but above all, thought of saving the life of another person.”

Mithun Rai further said, “Arif also tried to save Nishanth by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation (CPR). He never thought that by giving CPR, he would put his life at risk. He only wanted to save Nishanth. These youth are the role models in DK. These five Muslim youth should get an appreciation for their bravery for putting their life at risk. They only thought of helping a fellow human being without thinking of caste Creed or Religion. To appreciate their selfless service, we have honoured them.”

District Congress President Harish Kumar, State Secretary Suhail Kandak, Congress office-bearers Anil Kumar, Lukman Bantwal, Prasad Malli, Shoaib, Nasir Samaniga, Shariff Kanti, Nawaz Bantwal, Girish, Chandrahas, NSUI General Secretary Shawad Sullia Shaunak Rai, Afreed Ullal, and others were also present.
