District Administration celebrates Kanaka Jayanti
Udupi: The 529th birth anniversary of saint, poet Kanakadasa was celebrated in the district on Thursday, November 17 at the Govinda Kalyana Mantapa Kinnimulki.
The programme began with an invocation, Anuradha Additional DC welcomed the gathering. Pramod Madhwaraj district minister in-charge and minister for state fisheries, sports and youth service inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp followed by paying floral tributes to the portrait of Kanakadasa.
In his message Pramod Madhwaraj said that Kanakadasa should not be restricted to any particular caste or creed as he had given the message of secularism five centuries ago. Those messages are relevant today. It is the responsibility of all to ensure that justice is meted out to Kanakadasa, especially in the land where Kanaka was enlightened with the darshan of Lord Krishna. Kanaka Mandira was constructed in Car Street near Sri Krishna Math by my father, the then MLA of Udupi, Malpe Madhwaraj in 1968. The then Chief Minister S Nijalingappa had laid the foundation stone for it. There is a need to promote the thoughts and preaching of Kanakadasa, he added.
Prof B Shivaram Shetty president SVP Kannada Research center Mangaluru University delivered a special talk on Kanakadasa. Prizes were distributed on the occasion.
