District Administration Celebrates Tipu Jayanti Amidst Tight Security 

Mangaluru: Despite opposition and protest from many organizations, the district administration celebrated the Tipu Jayanti at the Netravati Auditorium, Zilla Panchayat here on November 10. The programme began with an invocation.

MLC Ivan D’Souza along with the District Congress Committee president K Harish Kumar and other dignitaries on the dais inaugurated the programme by lighting the traditional lamp and also offering floral tributes to the portrait of Tipu Sultan.

Addressing the gathering Harish Kumar said, “Tipu Sultan was not only a brave soldier but also a freedom fighter. To let the people know about the achievements of Tipu Sultan former chief minister Siddaramaiah started to celebrate Tipu Jayanti in the state. Yes, I agree some people are opposing the Tipu Jayanti. From next year the district administration should organize Tipu Jayani in a Public Place so that people can attend the programme in large numbers”, he said.

Member of Legislative Council Ivan D’Souza presided over the function. In his keynote address, Dr M A Uday Kumar principal of Mangaluru University College spoke on the life and achievements of Tipu Sultan.

Mayor of Mangaluru, Bhaskar K, TP president Mohammed Monu, Western Range IGP Arun Chakravarthi, Police Commissioner T R Suresh, District SP Dr B R Ravikanthe Gowda, Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil, ZP CEO Dr Selvamani, Additional DC Kumar, DK ZP standing committee president U P Ibrahim and others were present.

The district administration had made adequate security arrangements in and around the ZP premises where the programme was held.

In the absence of the District minister in-charge U T Khader his message was read out on the occasion.
