Mangaluru: The district administration destroyed Rs 16 lakh worth Heroin, Charas, Brown sugar and Ganja in the presence of the deputy commissioner, officials of the Police, Excise, Forest and Revenue departments, Judges and the media at NehruMaidan here, on March 21.
Speaking to mediapersons, Deputy commissioner of excise L A Manjunath said, “Today, we have destroyed 6.8 kgs of ganja, 960 grams Heroin, 950 grams Brown Sugar and 1.3 Kgs of Charas seized from various places in the district all worth Rs 16lakh. This was done in the presence of the media to send a clear message to the people, especially the youth, on the administration’s stand on drugs and to make the society better. An increasing number of youth are being enticed into using drugs even with the knowledge of how harmful it is and many spoil their lives, quickly getting addicted to the high of such substances.”
The above drugs were seized from various places in the district and 17 cases were registered. We have produced the same before the court and today we have destroyed those drugs in front of the media so that people should understand that the administration has taken all the measures to prevent such crimes.
Addressing the mediapersons Deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said that through this burning of the seized drugs, the administration wishes to call on the people to keep away from drugs and help to make the society better.
He further said that this is the second time we are destroying narcotics which were seized in 17 cases.
Police commissioner Chandra Sekhar, Principal District and Sessions Judge Uma M G, Excise Joint commissioner Mangaluru division Rajendra Prasad, Deputy commissioner Excise Udupi district Murali, Dr Ashalatha, information officer Khader Shah and others were also present.
What about tobacco and alcohol? One is known to give cancer while the other one is notorious for ruining lives of both addict and his/her immediate family. We will never stop these things as long as we approach the problem with selective bias. More education and regulations are the keys here. Not selective banning and outrage while glorifying others!!
