District Congress Felicitates Oscar Fernandes
Udupi: The district Congress committee organised a felicitation programme for Oscar Fernandes, who was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha for the fourth time, at the Congress Bhavan Brahmagiri here on Monday, June 13.
Oscar Fernandes, along with his wife Blossom, was welcomed ceremonially by party workers. The party workers bursted crackers and expressed their happiness on Oscar’s victory. On behalf of the district Congress, district in-charge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake along with Byndoor MLA Gopal Poojary and the president of Udupi district Congress, MLC Pratapchandra Shetty felicitated Oscar Fernandes with a shawl, Mysore peta, and a garland.
In his congratulatory remarks, Vinay Kumar Sorake said that Oscar Fernandes has taken up many schemes and projects in the district and the state. “He has worked hard to improve the life of labourers, small businessmen, farmers, and even large businesses. He has done tremendous work towards building a number of projects and construction of various structures like the Konkan Railway, Varahi project, National Highway, bridges, roads, etc. When he was the minister for Road and Surface Transport, Oscar put his all efforts to sanction the Malpe-Theerthalli road as a national highway. He has instructed to officials to speed up the work of the Surathkal-Kundapur National Highway. Oscar Fernandes is one of the best human beings among the politicians in our state,” he added.
After receiving the felicitation, Oscar Ferandes in his message thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi, vice president Rahul Gandhi, Chief Minster Siddaramaiah, KPPC president Dr G Parameshwar and all Congress leaders for giving him a chance to contest the Rajya Sabha elections for the fourth time.
Sharing his experience from when he started his political career, Oscar said that auto drivers and garage workers in Udupi had collected 25 paisa each for him to file his nomination for the Udupi Municipality election. “Today, whatever I earn in my political career, all the credit goes to our party workers. I’ll never forget the contribution of auto drivers, garage workers and party workers.”
“Congress workers have a major responsibility in disseminating and executing the welfare programmes initiated by the central and state governments. When UPA was in power, it brought revolutionary measures to ensure that India marched forward. The enactment of Right to Education as a law that makes school education compulsory for every kid is sure to remove illiteracy and poverty from the face of the nation, besides abolishing child labor.”
People especially the rural populace are unaware of the welfare schemes that were introduced by the former Congress-led UPA government. Congress workers should create awareness among the people on the development schemes, he added.
Gopal Poojary (MLA Bydoor), Prathapchandra Shetty (MLC), U R Sabhapathi, Basavaraj (Former MLAs), Congress leaders like Veroncia Cornelio, Sarala Kanchan, Amrith Shenoy, Sarasu Bangera, Sathish Ameen Padukere, Blossom Fernandes M A Gaphoor, Janardhan Thonse, Keshav Kotian, Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje, Sunil Bangera, various Block Congress presidents and others were present.
