District congress holds ‘Akrosh Divas’ against demonetisation

Udupi: As part of nationwide ‘Akrosh Divas’ the district congress committee organized a protest against the demonetization of Rs 500 and 1000 currency notes at the Clocktower on Monday, November 28.

The protest was inaugurated by M A Gafoor, Chairman state minority development authority and also Secretary KPCC by garlanding the Mahatma Gandhi Statue.

Congress leader Udyavar Nagesh Kumar addressing the gathering said that by demonetising the currency notes, the Prime Minister has literally left everyone in the country cash-strapped. After the demonetization Narendra Modi has insulted the common people who were waiting for cash in long queues in front of the banks. No one is opposing any move to fight against black money, but the way Modi government took the initiative without preparations have left the common people helpless. The sudden withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes has caused inconvenience to the people. The common man, especially the daily wage workers, small vendors and retail traders, have been severely affected. People are finding it difficult to meet their daily expenses. Farmers are facing resource crunch to carry out farming. The Prime Minister is not attending the Parliament when the House had taken up discussion on demonetisation issue. Economist and former prime minister Manmohan Singh spoke over demonetization. In the Rajya Sabha, prime minister Narendra Modi is not ready to answer, it is a shame, he added.

M A Gafoor addressing the gathering said that Narendra Modi has been talking about fighting black money, eradicating corruption for a while now. Those who have black money will not fall into the trap so easily. But, the poor and middle-class people are affected. The common man has been largely affected by the Union government’s decision to demonetize high-value currency. This drive was implemented without proper planning. The center had failed to retrieve black money stashed in foreign countries. During the Lok Sabha elections Narendra Modi had promised that within 100 days of becoming prime minister, he would deposit Rs 15 lakh in the bank account of every Indian by bringing back black money stashed abroad. Instead of taking action against Ambani and Adani, the Centre has put common people in trouble. The value of the rupee has come down after demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes. he added.

Congress leaders Sathish Ameen Padukere, Kishan Hegde Kolkebail, Meenakshi Madhava Bannaje, Amrith Shenoy, Yathish Karkera, Prashanth Poojary, Neeraj Patil, Veronica Cornelio, Roshni Olivera, Dr Sunitha Shetty, Prakhyath Shetty, Habib Ali, Chandrika Shetty, Harish Kini and others were present.
