District Kambala Committee Holds Vijayotsava
Mangaluru: “The District Kambala Committee would like to thank the President of India for approving the promulgation of the prevention of cruelty to animals (Karnataka Amendment) ordinance 2017 making it possible for the Kambala which is a traditional Buffalo race of Tulunadu”, said the president of District Kambala Committee Shantaram Shetty Barkur in a press meet held at Hotel Janatha Delux Pattumudi here on July 4.
Addressing the media persons Shantharam Shetty said, “Kambala races organised in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district were banned by the Supreme Court in 2014 based on a petition filed by various animal rights organizations. On July 3, President Pranab Mukherjee approved the ordinance to hold Kambala. We would like to thank the former CM of Karnataka D V Sadananda Gowda, Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah and MP Nalin Kumar Kateel for their support in passing the ordinance to hold Kambala.”
Shatharam Shetty further said, “To retain Kambala the media has played a vital role. The law minister of Karnataka T B Jayachandra, District Minister In-charge Ramanath Rai, Udupi district minister in-charge Pramod Madhwaraj, A Manju, Abhaychandra Jain, D H Shaker Murthy, Ivan D’Souza, Ganesh Karnik and Sunil Kumar have supported us a lot. We are grateful to all of them.”
Later the Kambala Committee burst fire crackers and distributed sweets to celebrate their victory. Ashok Kumar Rai, Bhaskar S Kotian, Vijaykumar Kangina Mane, P R Shetty Kuloor, Sukumar Shetty and others were also present.
