District Women Congress holds condolence meet for Gauri Lankesh
Udupi: A condolence meet for journalist Gauri Lankesh was organized by the district Mahila Congress at the Congress Bhavan on Thursday September 7.
Rajya Sabha member Oscar Fernandes paid floral tribute to the portrait of Gauri Lankesh and said that she has fought for human rights not only in the state but also across the country through her magazine. Her murder was a big shock for all of us. She carried out a crusade fearlessly, this murder is an assault on democracy. We demand that the culprits be arrested soon.
Social activist Nagesh Udyavar said that there was a conspiracy behind the murder, Lankesh was targetted because of her efforts in fighting against corruption and human rights. Lankesh’s murder marks the death of democracy. He demanded the immediate arrest of the murderers and the implementation of measures to prevent such attacks on progressive activists in the future.
District women congress vice president Joythi Hebbar speaking on the occasion said that we condemn the murder of Gauri Lankesh and call upon all progressive people to rise in protest against the growing intolerance and killing spree that is happening throughout the country.
Women congress leaders Dr Sunita Shetty, Roshani Olivera, Chandrika Shetty, Sarala Kanchan, Sarasu Bangera, Mamatha Shetty, Celina Karkada, Sandhya Thilakraj, Geetha Wagale, Sulochana Bangera, Shanthalatha Shetty, Mary D’Souza and others were present.
Freedom of speech always should come with some responsiblity.
