Diwakar Elected Mayor and Vedavati Deputy Mayor of MCC
Mangaluru: The 21st Mayoral election of Mangaluru City Corporation was held at the Mangala hall, MCC here on February 28.
Diwakar from the 46th Cantonment Ward was elected as the Mayor of Mangaluru while Vedavarti Janaki from 9th Kulai Ward has been elected as the Deputy Mayor of MCC.
On February 28, before the elections, all the 60 elected corporators took the oath to form the council. Later the Regional commissioner from Mysuru V Yashwant conducted the election Process. MCC commissioner Ajith Kumar Shanadi, DC Sindhu Roopesh and ADC Roopa monitored the election process.
The Mayor’s post was reserved for the Backward class and the deputy mayor’s post was reserved for women (general). Diwakar from the BJP and Keshav from the Congress had submitted their nomination for the Mayor’s post. Diwakar was elected as the new Mayor of MCC with 46 votes including those of MLA Dr Bharat and MLA Vedavyas Kamath. Whereas Keshav secured 15 votes including 14 MLC Ivan D’Souza’ vote. While 2 corporators from SDPI abstained from voting.
For the post of Deputy Mayor Vedavati from BJP and Zeenath from Congress contested. Vedavati was elected as Deputy Mayor with 46 votes and Zeenath secured 15 votes.
The MCC elections were held on 12 November 2019 for 60 wards. BJP gained victory in the MCC elections with 44 seats, the Congress Party won in 14 awards while the SDPI won 2 seats. There was confusion in the selection of the Mayor due to the reservation policy and the Mayoral Elections were delayed for more than 3 months. Finally, the Elections were held on February 28.
