Mangaluru: No doubt that Mangaluru City, also selected as one of the ‘Smart City’ is one of the upcoming cities in India, and the City is looking for all the round development including the waste management system. In this connection, the DK district Administration has been interested in setting up a Construction & Demolition {C & D} Waste Recycling Unit in Mangaluru, and further utilize the products in the infrastructure development of the City. As a precursor to this, DK Dist Administration and Dakshina Kannada Nirmithi Kendra, in association Association of Consulting Civil Engineers Mangalore Centre {ACCE}; Civil Dept, NITK, Surathkal; CREDAI, Mangaluru; Indian Institute of Architects Mangaluru Manipal Centre; Kanara Builders Association, Mangaluru; Institute of Engineers, Mangaluru; Kodagu, Udupi, and DK Engineering Association; D K Contractors Association; MCC Contractors Association; Mangaluru City Corporation; and Mangaluru Urban Development Authority hosts Workshop on ‘Recycling Construction & Demolition Waste’ at Hotel Ocean Pearl on Tuesday, 28 August 2018.

The one day workshop involved eminent personalities and consultants who are already excelled in this field. As Construction Industry produces huge waste called demolition waste during rehabilitation, repairs and modernizing the buildings. Indian cities produce huge amount of Municipal solid waste every day in each town, and Mangaluru is no exception, where huge amount of such waste is produced due to increasing infrastructure, apartments and other buildings in town. So this workshop was organized to bring an awareness and also make a change in the present practice of disposal of waste.

The inauguration of the seminar was held at Hotel Ocean Pearl, Mangaluru at 10 am on Tuesday 28 August, and the chief guest for the occasion was DC Sasikanth Senthil, along with guests of honor Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr. M.R. Ravi; Prof Katta Venkataramana- Professor, Dept of Civil Engineering at NITK, Surathkal; and Rajendra Kalbhavi, Project Director of DK Nirmithi Kendra. Addressing the gathering DC Sasikanth Senthil said, “Mangaluru is growing so fast, it needs intelligent and experience engineers for its infrastructure and development. Since this City is looking for the all-round development including waste management system, workshop-like these will surely help in undertaking new projects in this regard. With so much C and D waste generated daily in tonnes in this City, to start a C & D waste recycling unit is the need of the hour, where the products can be utilized for infrastructure development. Wish the workshop all success and hope it will bring out good results from you all”.

Also speaking Dr M R Ravi said, “This workshop is a good initiative and the efforts and learning that is gained from this workshop will benefit the engineers in the long run during development and infrastructure of the City. Decades ago no one cared about recycling of waste, but due to many awareness programmes and projects people are learning to recycle. We need to add more industry and education institution in this City will benefit Mangaluru. It is not about the economy we should always concentrate on, but also ecology. Citizens should be serious about their waste and try to recycle as much as they can. And Mangaluru surely does need a C and D Waste Recycling Plant with all such waste produced on daily basis”.

The speakers during the workshop were: Dr Vimal Kumar-Secretary General, Centre for Fly Ash Research and Management, New Delhi who spoke on “Rules and Regulations for C & D Waste Management; Mohan Ramanathan-MD, Advanced Construction Technologies Pvt Ltd, Chennai on topic “Demolition Methods for Effective C & D Waste Recycling”; Dr Gopalkrishna- Director, CBRI Roorki, on topic ” Research Needs in gainful Utilization of C & D Waste”; Shajahan Ali-VP, IL and FS Environmental Infrastructure and service Ltd on topic “Experiences of Running C an D Plant in Delhi”; Abijeeth Gawde-Head Business development, Godrej Construction on topic “Experience in handling C & D Waste Plant in Mumbai”.

The panel discussion on Recycling C & D Waste for Mangaluru development under the moderator Mohan Ramanathan was held after tea break, with all the speakers of the day, along with MCC Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer; Er Kantharaju- Superintending Engineer PWD Mangaluru circle; Er Dharmaraj= IDF Chief Consultant for MCC; and D B Mehta- President of Mangaluru CREDAI. Conclusion remarks and resolution was delivered by Mohan Ramanathan. Technical advisers during the workshop were: Dr Subhas C Yaragal-Dean, Planning and development, NITK; Varghese George-HOD Dept of Civil Engineering, NITK; K S Babunarayan- Prof. Dept of Civil Engineering, NITK; and Katta Venkataramana- Prof. Dept of Civil Engineering, NITK, at Surathkal.

The welcome address was delivered by Er Rajendra Kalbhavi- President of DK Nirmith Kendra; vote of thanks was proposed by Er Anil D’souza, and the entire programme was professionally compered by Er Arun Prabha, both Board Members of ACCE, Mangaluru Centre.
