DKZPHPS Boys Get a Modern Toilet! A Gift of Love from MRT-115 and MLC-82

Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School- Panjimogaru, Mangaluru {DKZPHPS} Boys Get a New Modern Toilet! A Gift of Love from Mangalore Round Table-115 {MRT-115} and Mangalore Ladies Circle-82 {MLC-82} on Monday, 28 May 2018

Mangaluru: As the saying goes, “When You Gotta Go You Gotta Go!” – It means you have to go to the restroom/toilet really bad. But many a times in Dakshina Kannada or Mangaluru, when citizens are in desperate need of a toilet to use, they’ll hardly find one- and the only option for women is to go behind the bushes or walls to relieve themselves; and for men they can pee wherever there is a suitable place they think they can use it to do their thing? But as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Clean India” campaign to provide new sanitary toilets to more than 60 million homes by 2019, many district and city administrations have taken up the toilet building projects.

Sources reveal that more than 53 percent of Indian homes, about 70 percent in the villages — lack toilets. Poor sanitation and contaminated water cause 80 percent of the diseases afflicting rural India, and diarrhea is a leading killer of children younger than 5, has said UNICEF. PM Modi has once said that this is a shame for a country that has global aspirations and that the lack of sanitary conveniences is demeaning to women. And for that matter, few years ago even a politician had made a comment stating that “There are More Temples than Toilets in India ?”, which had sparked off a controversy, the best and perhaps only way to get a conversation about any subject going in India. Okay, that was just a brief description about the lack of toilets in India.

But now coming to the real topic of today’s project, where the members of Mangalore Round Table-115 and Mangalore Ladies Circle-82 had generously contributed in giving the gift of love, in the form of a brand new modern toilet to the school boys of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School, located in Panjimogaru-Mangaluru. Since the earlier boys toilet at the school was completely dilapidated and very bad to use, MRT and MLC decided to build a new one, and the project was materialized today, when the new toilet was launched on Monday, 28 May 2018-built at a cost of nearly Rs 3 lakhs. “A part of the funds for this project was contributed by Ms Vimala Lobo of Mangaluru along with an NGO named ‘Mritsa’ from the fundraising Walkathon they had organized in August 2012, and they had donated us Rs 1.5 lakhs towards this toilet project in 2015, which we made use of it now” said Cr Nanditha Fernandes- Chairperson, MLC-82 .

The new toilet was inaugurated by chief guests namely-TR Christopher Arvinth- National President, Round Table of India, and TR Moriya Philip-National Project Convener, RTI; along with guests of honor- TR Mayur Shah- Chairman-Area XIII, RTI, CL Sharol Pinto- Chairperson Area XIII, and TR Vinod Pinto- Area Secretary XIII. The inaugural ceremony was also graced by the Mangaluru City Corporation Corporator-Dayanand Shetty of Vidyanagar/Panjimogaru ward, Varadraj ‘Vadi’ Shenoy-Chairman, MRT-115, Royston D’souza and Dane D’souza, both former Chairman of MRT-115, Cr Nanditha Fernandes- Chairperson, MLC-82, among many other MRT and MLC board members, and well-wishers.

The Schoolboys were all excited to see the new toilet, and were looking forward to use the facility. The Headmistress and the teachers along with the students of the School thanked the members of MRT-115 and MLC-82 for their kind generosity in constructing the new boys toilet, and also for their support in the past towards the school academic projects. After concluding the formal function of the toilet inauguration, the Chief guests and guests of honor were given a tour of the School by the MRT and MLC members- and during the day they will also visit the other schools sponsored by MRT and MLC in their development projects- and this evening book distribution for the DK govt school in Bajal-Mangaluru.
