 Does Your Back & Joints Hurt? A Talk on ‘Healthy Aging with Strong Bones’ by KMC Doctors was held on Wednesday, 7 August at Hotel Goldfinch, Mangaluru to mark Bone & Joint Week,

Mangaluru : If your back and joints hurt, you’re not alone because bone and joint ailments are some of the most common problems facing millions of people around the world. Bone and Joint Week is the best source for information on causes and prevention of musculo-skeletal conditions. During this Week people took part in the discussions on preventing and treating arthritis, back pain, trauma, pediatric conditions affecting bones, and osteoporosis.

To mark this Week, a talk on “Healthy Aging with Strong Bones” was held at Hotel Goldfinch, Mangaluru on Wednesday, 7 August at 4 pm, where nearly 200 people participated. Dr Anand Venugopal, Regional Chief of Clinical Services- KMC Hospitals Mangaluru in his welcome address stated that “Orthopedic Society and KMC Hospitals Mangaluru on occasion of Bone and Joint week had organized this public awareness program on Healthy Aging with Strong Bones. ” The objective of this Public Awareness Talk is to enable every citizen to take care of their aging body in the right way, so as to help lead a more comfortable life.” he added.

Dr Surendra Kamath, Head of Orthopedics Department – KMC Hospital Mangaluru & President of Canara Orthopedic Society addressing the audience said, Senior citizens, care takers / children of senior citizens, people with sedentary Lifestyle, anyone with back pain/ back related problems benefited from this Week. Speaking on Healthy Aging with Strong Bones he said, “Healthy Aging depend on few things, namely -you need to have a balanced Diet, maintain body weight, stress on exercise, do yoga and meditation, avoid falls-use walking aids, have adequate lighting at nights, avoid misuse and overuse of joints, maintain high bone density, encourage outdoor games for young, avoid smoking and alcohol, etc. A free BMD (Bone Mineral Density) test will be conducted here before and after the talk”.

Stating that Prevention is much better that Cure, Dr Ishwara Keerthi, the Consultant in Spine and Back Pain Care – KMC Hospital & Secretary of Canara Orthopedic Society stated that the Karnataka Orthopaedic Association and Canara Orthopaedic Society is doing series of program to observe the Bone and Joint week to educate Public on Healthy Aging with Strong Bones for a healthy Lifestyle. “If you want to know more about Back pain you can log on to www.knowyourback.org”.

Dr Shrinath Shetty, Endocrinologist (Hormone & Thyroid Care Specialist) of KMC and Dr Rajendra A- associate professor of Orthopaedics-KMC also briefed about the Bone and Back Pain during the occasion. A interaction was held between the four doctors and the audience, where a bunch of queries posed by the participants were answered to the point. An advice chart on Diet for Healthy bones as well as lifestyle modification on Healthy Back was give to all participants.

Rakesh Darshan- the Marketing Manager of KMC Hospital, Jyothi-Mangaluru compered the programme.
