‘Donate Organs, Save Lives’ 42 Sahyadri Students Pledge to donate all their organs

Mangaluru: “Sahyadri students come to health and pledge their organs during occasions like their birthday or their parents birthday. This gives them a sense of pride and I can see the joy in them as they get their pledge card. This initiative has helped them celebrate their special days more meaningfully .” – Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor.

Sahyadri College MBA and Engineering students have taken a pledge to donate all their organs. They have registered themselves as donors in the National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) Portal.

Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, under the supervision of its Health and counselling centre, has taken up the initiative to provide awareness to its students and staff about organ donation and encourage them to donate organ and we are happy to announce that because of this effort our Student Counsellor Mr Ankith S Kumar has motivated 48 students in the college over the span of one year to take a pledge to donate their organs. This act has made the student feel a sense of pride about themselves and responsibility towards society.

Each day approximately 6,300 people die and what makes this haunting is that presently there are 83,513 people waiting for organs to be donated, yet each day 17 people die because they do not receive a transplant. These statistics show that people who are waiting for organ transplants have a good chance at being saved and get what they need. The sad truth is though, because of the lack of people willing to donate organs, many people will continue to wait for organs to save their lives. ?Waiting lists of patients for organ transplants become longer as the need for transplantable organs increases? Think back to how someone might feel when a close family member or friend dies. Without argument, the feeling one experience when going through a time like that is one of the most painful experiences. The feeling when one gets when they know that they will never again see the person you loved so much, never hold them, touch them, and experience their presence. It is a horrible feeling. What many do not realize is simply by donating organs, you can help someone else not have to deal with that pain. Organ transplantation gives thousands of children and adults each year a renewed chance at living full and active lives. However, the need for organs and tissue outweighs their availability.

Committing to be an organ donor is a generous decision that can save the lives of up to eight individuals, and even more if a donor can give corneas and tissue. Almost anyone, regardless of age, race or gender, can become an organ and tissue donor, and there are no costs to the person’s family or estate. With a humble intention to serve back to the society.

Organ donation is the process of donating organs or biological tissue to a living recipient, who is in need of a transplant. What is brain death? And how is it related to organ donation? Everything you need to know and more visit the website www.organindia.org

Sahyadri College is happy to help anyone or any institution who wishes to join us in this noble cause. For details please contact Mr Ankith S Kumar, Student Counsellor and Health centre in-charge Telephone: +91 96328 48204.
