Don’t Compare Me to Past Mayors- I’ll Be Better, Will Work Hard and Accomplish my Goals with Good Results!- Mayor Kavita Sanil

Mangaluru: At the ‘Meet the Press’ held at Mangalore Press Club, where an interaction was held with the new Mayor of Mangaluru City Corporation Ms Kavitha Sanil, a few questions related to the civic issues faced by the citizens of Mangaluru which were asked by the journos were answered by the Mayor to the best of her knowledge. Addressing on the water issue, the Mayor said, ” Anticipating another water crisis for Mangaluru and surrounding areas, we have barred the use of water by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) and Mangalore Special Economic Zone Ltd. (MSEZ) from lifting water from the AMR power plant dam at Shamboor across Netravati. To conserve available water for drinking, we have also barred new water connections for construction sites for the next few weeks.”

“With no inflow from the Netravathi into the Thumbe vented dam and AMR Power Pvt. Ltd.’s dam at Shamboor, on the upstream of the Thumbe, the corporation needs to conserve water at the two dams to meet the drinking water requirement of the city, Bantwal and other areas. I had visited the Thumbay vented dam and the dam at Shamboor, and a decision has been taken on water rationing in the city. During the weekend Thumbay dam was measured at 4.5 meters, while the level at the AMR dam stood at 6.15 m. Inflow from the Netravathi into these two dams has stopped in the last 10 days. But with judicious use of water available drinking water requirement for the next two months could be met. A list of bore-wells and open wells was being made from which water can be sourced for supplying water to parched areas in the city. We’ll take all measures to see that water is available to the citizens of Mangaluru” she added.

Mayor further said, ” I had personally urged the DC to direct the companies not to lift water from AMR dam anymore as the water was required to meet a calamity like situation. But people have to be careful not to waste water for purposes like washing vehicles, gardening and the like. As planned, we have commenced rationing of water that is being supplied to Mangaluru city. The move is aimed at conserving this natural resource through the summer. This rationing will continue till such time the civic body feels the water supply position is comfortable. With rationing in place for all and situation better than last year, there will no major worries”.

Outlining her other plans under her tenure, Mayor Sanil said, ” I will make sure that MCC goes all computerized during my tenure, and within next few months people will be able to pay water tax, property tax etc online. Five e-toilets will be set up, of which two (one for men and one for ladies) will come up near Pabba’s Ice Cream Parlour-MG Road; two (men and ladies) at Kadri Park and one at Hampankatta Signal light- all these 5 e-toilets are in collaboration with HPCL; We will be shifting all the electric and telephone poles which are of no use; my aim is to beautify the city, so new and bright lights will be replacing the old ones; parks ( about 18 of them in the city) will be upgraded and maintained, with the area corporator in-charge of each park; Build a few high-tech bus-stands; upgrade and renovate 7-8 old markets; restore dilapidated drainage and footpaths; erect new street signs for the benefit of tourists and visitors”.

When asked about the digging done by MESCOM in various spots in the City, for which the Mayor replied, ” I was shocked to see when I went around and saw many places being dug by MESCOM without our permission. I warned them not to dig anymore, unless they pay us for the damage done, and also give us the assurance that they will fix the footpaths and streets that were dug up. We have already seized all the materials and other machinery used for digging. We have issued a notice to MESCOM, and if they don’t take quick action in fixing the footpaths and streets, we’ll file criminal charges. It’s not right on the part of MESCOM to carry out their work without prior approval from MCC. “

When a journo posed a query at Mayor Kavitha stating that in the past many Mayors had promised many things but never completed the projects what they promised, for which Mayor Kavitha replied, ” Please don’t compare me to the past Mayors. As a two-time councillor, being the chairperson of the Standing Committee for Public Health, Education and Social Justice, and also as chairperson of the Standing Committee for Town Planning and Improvement, I have worked hard to the best of my abilities. Now as a responsible Mayor of the ‘Smart City’, I promise that I will discharge my duties with dedication, commitment and responsibility and accomplish all the goals, and see that my dreams come true. Trust me! “.

Former MCC Mayor Sashidhar Hegde, Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Association president Jagannath Shetty Bala, were among others present on the dais during the interaction meet.

Dear Mayor, Its my long lived dream to see my place beautiful which is been over shadowed by the current so called real estate boom. The promises that you have made is just too hard to achieve although I wish and hope I am proven wrong. Unless proper infrastructure will be in place everything will be a waste of time and money. The corporator alone will not be able to carry out the duties and hence the responsibilities should be given to the citizens as well. Identify all the wards and put forth the criteria to award the best ward… Read more »
