‘Don’t put pressure on children’ – Minister Dr Jayamala

Udupi: The state Minister for Women and Child Development and Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens Dr Jayamala on Saturday urged parents not to put pressure on their children in choosing their career adding that several students have ended their lives unable to bear the pressure.

She was speaking after participating in the prize distribution programme of the Sri Krishna Vesha Competitions at Rajangana Udupi on Saturday, September 15.

“Parents should not be the source of mental pressure on their children. Parents should, therefore, guide their children in their studies. Education should not merely be to pass the examinations or to score good marks, it must help the students to gain knowledge, get rid of superstitions and inculcate moral values. Pressure from parents to do well can have negative impact on the development of their children. Unrealistic expectations could put continuous pressure on the children to do well in academics or co-curricular activities”, said Dr Jayamala.

She further said, “Parents need to love their children and inspire them to think. We should desist from filling their minds with our own prejudices. They should be allowed to think independently and choose their areas of interest to study or leisure. They should also be motivated to explore the world and understand it in their own way”.

Sri Vidyadeesha Theertha Swamiji of Paryaya Palimar Math, Sri Eshapriya Theertha Junior Swamiji of Adamar Math and Vedavyasa Tantri Diwan of Palimar Math were also present.
