Dr B M Hegde Receives Nayudamma Gold Medal

Hyderabad: Padma Bhushan Dr Belle Monappa Hegde, an eminent Cardiologist and educationist from Karnataka, was presented the prestigious Dr Yelavarthi Nayudamma award here on Thursday. The award carries a gold medal.

Dr Hegde, after retiring as vice-chancellor of Manipal University, has been living in Mangaluru. He received the award on the occasion of a national-level seminar on ‘Frontiers in Science and Technology’ organised by the Telangana Academy of Sciences at the National Geophysical Research Institute here.

The annual award is given to persons who have made a significant contribution to the field of science and technology. It has been instituted to perpetuate the memory of Padma Shri Yelavarthi Nayudamma, a chemical engineer and scientist of international repute, who died in the bombing of Air India Emperor Kanishka Flight 182 on June 23, 1985.

The day of the seminar marked the 31st death anniversary of Dr Nayudamma. Earlier recipients of this award include, among others, T Ramasami, A Sivathanu Pillai, Nori Dattatreyudu, Sam Pitroda, G Madhavan Nair, Kota Harinarayana, V K Aatre, R Chidambaram, R A Mashelkar, J S Bajaj, K Kasturirangan, Verghese Kurien, S Z Qasim, M G K Menon and M.S. Swaminathan and Dr Vijay Kumar Saraswat.
