Dr Christine Inaugurates 9th Annual Conference ‘IBSCON – 2019’ at FMMC
Mangaluru: The 9th Annual Conference of the Indian Brachytherapy Society “IBSCON – 2019”, was held at the DM Hall, Father Muller Medical College here on August 31.
The programme began with an invocation. Organizing Secretary Dr M S Vidyasagar welcomed the gathering.
The programme was inaugurated by Renowned Gynecologist Oncologist of Gustave – Roussy Institute Paris, Dr Christine Haie Meder by lighting the traditional lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais.
Addressing the gathering Dr Christine said, “I would like to thank the organizing committee for providing me an opportunity to take part in the conference. This is the 6th time I am visiting India to attend the conference. This programme reminds me of the conference in France which was organized for the first time and I see the same spirit here. I wish the organizers all the very best.”
Addressing the gathering President of Indian Brachytherapy Society Dr R L Bhalavat said, “I thank the organizers and the FMMC administration for accepting our invitation to organize the conference here. We are regularly working from the past five years by organizing three workshops and one conference in a year. I expect the brachytherapy and the team grow to the extent of giving the world the Brachytherapy where it requires.”
In his presidential address Director, FMCI Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho said, “When the organizing secretary approached me to organize the 9th National conference of Brachytherapy at our campus in Mangaluru, I was surprised and expressed my doubt to him because to organize a workshop or CME it takes two to three months preparation and to organize the National-level conference we need at least 6 months preparation. For the three days Brachytherapist, the oncologists especially radio oncologists will be here to share their experience. We are grateful for the Indian Brachytherapy society for choosing Fr Muller Medical College to organize the conference and we are delighted to host this programme for three days at our campus”.
Fr Richard further said, “Brachytherapy Society is the pioneer, we have been doing it for the past 10 in our hospital. The work that we do should be known to others so that many others will be inspired and learn from you. Sharing our experience with others and also learning from others is a matter of great joy and happiness”.
Fr Richard also said, “Brachytherapy is a form of radiotherapy where a sealed radiation source is placed inside or next to the area requiring treatment. Brachytherapy is commonly used as an effective treatment for cervical, prostate, breast, esophageal and skin cancer and can also be used to treat tumours in many other parts of the body. Treatment results have demonstrated that the cancer-cure rates of brachytherapy are either comparable to surgery and external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) or are improved when used in combination with these techniques. Brachytherapy can be used alone or in combination with other therapies such as surgery, EBRT and chemotherapy. I wish the organizers all the very best”.
Organizing Secretary N S Athyamaan delivered the vote of thanks. Administrator FMMCH Fr Rudolph Ravi D’Sa, Deam FMMC Dr Jayaprakash Alva, Chief of Research Dr Sanjeev Pai, Dr Umesh Mahantshetty, Dt Jayaram, Fr Ajith Menezes and others were also present.
