Drainage Water Floods Shops at Highland, Mayor Kavitha Visits Spot
Mangaluru: When the Monsoon starts, the city roads flood with water. Some building owners without proper planning of the drainage system are facing severe flooding in the premises in the rainy season. A similar incident was reported at Highland here on June 12.
On June 11, there was heavy rain and landslides were reported in a number of places in the twin districts. At Highland in the city, more than 15 shops were closed because of the reverse flow of drainage water in the building premises and shops.
Speaking to mangalorean.com Mayor Kavitha Sanil said, “I had received a call from a local about the blockage of the drainage at Highland. I immediately rushed to the spot and was shocked to see the drainage flowing in the basement of the building where 15 shops are located. The owner of the building during the construction did not plan the drainage system properly. Instead of connecting the drainage to the manhole below the level of the building it was connected to the nearby chamber on the side of the road without consulting any of the MCC Engineers.”
Kavitha further said, “From June 11, we have been receiving heavy rains and now more than 15 shops are closed as the drainage water has entered the shops. We are clearing the chamber and will make way for the drainage to flow to another chamber.”
Speaking to mangalorean.com a resident of Falnir, 71-year-old Chandrashekhar Achar, said, “I am residing in Falnir area and it is very difficult to walk on the street. There is no proper footpath, Vehicles ply on the footpath. Once I had a fall when I was walking towards my house, while I was giving way to a vehicle, I lost balance fell down since there was no proper footpath for pedestrians. My request with the Mayor is to construct the roads scientifically with a footpath where people can walk and not park their vehicles.”
Work is now being carried out to clear the water and help the shop owners to resume their business.
