Dubai Activist Writes to PM Modi about Mangalorean Clifford Rebello being Tortured by His Employer, Coppins Holdings Dubai in Abu Dhabi

Mangaluru : A social activist based in Dubai, has been trying his best to get justice for Mangalorean origin Clifford Joseph Rebello, who was employed with Coppins Holdings-Dubai, and after being terminated from the job, has been kept locked up by the company without proper food, water and other facilities. The activist had also contacted the Indian Embassy in the Gulf, and has also approached many other sources in order to get justice for Clifford. And now, he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to step in and do the needful. Following is the letter addressed to PM Modi by the social activist :

CLIFFORD JOSEPH REBELLO

Dear Honorable Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modiji,

This refers to the above case handled by Indian Embassy referring correspondence; Ramesh Chander, Attache Labor, Community Affairs, Abu Dhabi, UAE in the trail mail. Also refer to N.V. No. Abu/CW/383/3/2019/38 dated 13/1/2019 Clifford Joseph Rebello (Employee) V/s Coppins Holdings Dubai (Employer)

On 9th October, 2019, I have personally written to Honourable Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishanker, External Affairs Minister, Govt. of India, who have in turn responded to the Embassy of India, Abu Dhabi to look into the matter and take it forward. In this context, after studying the case the Embassy of India has written to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, United Arab Emirates on 16th of October, 2019 (copy attached) responding to the Ministry’s request for filing the execution.

The letter clearly states that the execution was already filed by Clifford and that now the Employer has abstained from carrying on the execution order of the Court. No response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yet and have to study how far the Embassy has followed up personally on this matter (as personal involvement is necessary for the quick response). Ramesh Chander ji was very cooperative in this regards and should take it up with the Ministry with personal intervention.

Sir, it is now more than 20 days that Clifford is confined in the exile of the Employer without food and water. He is not allowed to go out and locked in the premises. This has been witnessed by Ramesh Chander of the Indian Embassy during his several personal meetings with Clifford. However, with the help of some friends and the Embassy, we have managed to supply food and water through some means of entry on humanitarian grounds. Since 2014, because of this, Clifford has not got an opportunity to go to India and see his ailing family and though the Court passed the judgement on November, 2018 in his favour; he is still confined in his accommodation in this situation. His freedom of movement is restricted and thus is under mental torture by the Employer. This situation is understood from my meeting with him recently and as briefed by him during my meeting. His current photograph is attached herewith.

What I understand is that Clifford Rebello needs an Advocate who can represent him in the Court and get the execution completed. The Court order to pay his dues of AED.90K being all his pending salaries needs to be honored by the Employer. The Court will instruct the Employer to do so by it’s own means and formalities. On receiving his dues from the Court completely, Mr. Clifford will then leave to India on safe package. In the current situation Clifford is not able to pay the Advocate’s fees and either the Embassy or someone needs to help him out in this matter.

Respected Sir, I appreciate your help in this matter to save an Indian whom even the Court of United Arab Emirates has passed the judgement in his favour of his rights. Your intervention through the highest level will surely succeed in concluding this delayed matter of an sorrowful Indian Citizen quickly. Hope justice will prevail soon and Mr. Clifford will be able to rejoin his family back in India.

Awaiting your favourable response Sir, I remain,

Sincerely Yours,

S. P. – Social Activist
