EC seizes 19.05 lakh cash, 201.87 litres liquor in Udupi district – DC Priayanka

Udupi: The Election Commission’s surveillance and flying squads have seized over Rs 19.05 lakh cash and 201.87 litres of liquor in Udupi district, said Priyanka Mary Francis deputy commissioner.

Speaking at the press meet held at the DC office on Wednesday, April 18, DC said that the flying squads have seized Rs 19,05 lakh cash in 10 cases being transported without documents. The model code of conduct has been put into place in the Udupi district immediately after the EC announced that the Karnataka assembly polls would be held on May 12 across the state for 224 seats.

The Excise Department has also seized 201.87 litres of liquor worth of Rs 1.32 lakhs and registered 8 cases under the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965. 21 FIR’s have been lodged for the violation of the election model code of conduct, she said.

The election notifications have been notified on April 17 in Karnataka. The notifications pave way for candidates to file their nominations in the constituencies they are contesting from.

April 24 is the last date for filing the nominations while scrutiny will be taken up on April 25. The last date for withdrawal is April 27. Polling will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. across the state on May 12. Votes will be counted on May 15.

A total of 36,022 applications have been received including 20,682 for new registrations, 6 under Form 6A, 8,792 under Form 7, 5,602 under Form 8 and 950 under Form 8A respectively. The drive was taken up between February 22 and April 14. The deadline to submit the electoral forms is April 24, following which the Electoral Returning Officer would be taking the decision. The nominations are being accepted from Tuesday. The nominations would be received at Sthri Shakthi Bhavan at Byndoor, Assistant Commissioner’s office, Mini Vidhana Soudha at Kundapur, Old Zilla Panchayat building for Udupi and Kaup and Mini Vidhana Soudha at Taluk office in Karkala.

Elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful voting amid tight security across the district using Electronic Voting Machines along with Voter Verified Paper Audit Trails.

As many as 17 polling booths are marked ‘pink booths’, managed by all-women officials, including police, in all the 5 Assembly segments of the district. One Divyang booth is manned entirely by physically challenged officials and one tribal booth is set up in the district, she said.

The DC released T-shirts and caps for the 40 employees of SLRM (Solid and Liquid Resource Management) units in the areas of Varmaballi, Nitte, Hebri, Vandse, Hardalli-Mandalli, Mudaru and Mundkuru. These are employed in the SVEEP publicity.

She said that as many as 15 companies of SSB (Shasasthra Sainik Bal) are expected, of which three have already arrived.
