Eight Die after Boat Capsizes in Karwar
Karwar: Around Eight persons have reportedly lost their lives after a boat in which they were moving capsized in the Arabian Sea in Karwar on Monday afternoon. Sources said that the death toll may increase as the boat was carrying nearly 25 persons. Efforts are on to rescue others.
According to sources, a group of 25 people had been to Korumgudda from Karwar to take part in the fair festival. During their return, a heavy tide in the sea toppled the boat, which then capsized.
Further, it is learnt that those who knew swimming tried to save themselves by hanging on to the capsised boat. Efforts to rescue others were made by the occupants of another boat which was arriving from behind.
The team of coastal security police along with the fishermen rushed to the spot and have launched a rescue operation.
As the information spread, Uttar Kannada DC SS Nakul and SP Vinayak Patil have also reached the spot.
Kurmagad which is an island in the Arabian Sea, 3 km off Karwar coast, has a temple which opens for only two days in a year. More than 25,000 people visit the island every year to offer the puja.
