Employer Reluctant to send Jacintha Mendonca Back Till Her Contract Ends

Employer in Saudi Arabia Reluctant to send Nurse Jacintha Mendonca Back to India Till Her Contract Ends- and also been torturing her demanding that 24,000 Saudi Riyal paid back to him

Mangaluru: Seems like Jacintha Mendonca, aged 47, a native of Karkala, and a nurse by profession will have to wait another eight months before she could get relieved from the hands of her employer who has been torturing her ever since she was made to work as a bonded laborer. In the meantime the anxious wait by her two children back here in Karkala has been now nullified due this latest development. It is also learnt that Jacintha’s health has been deteriorating, and the employer is not showing any pity on her. In spite of the intervention of Indian Ministry of External Affairs and Embassy in Saudi Arabia, the Kafil, in Saudi known as Kafil is reluctant to send her before she completes her two-year contract, and also torturing Jacintha saying that until the 24,000 Saudi Riyal is paid back to him, he would not let her return back to India.

Recalling the story, Jacintha Mendonca was recruited by Mumbai based ‘M/s Trio Tracks Consultants’ and was sent to Saudi Arabia on June 10, 2016, to work with a Saudi sponsor, namely, Abdullah Mohammad Allah Almutairi. Initially, she arrived in Riyadh and later was sent to Taif and thereafter to Yanbu to work with a lady relative of the sponsor. Before leaving India, Jacintha was promised of a house nurse job in Qatar with a salary of Rs 25,000 per month by her Mangaluru agent James D’Mello. But unfortunately, she was taken to Yanbhu, Saudi Arabia, where she had to look after 10 children of three wives of the Saudi employer and made to work for over 16 hours a day.

Along with Indian Ministry of External Affairs and Embassy in Saudi Arabia, the Human Rights Protection Foundation (HRPF), Udupi, is also working for the safe return of Jacintha, but all their efforts are in vain since the employer is very much reluctant to send Jacintha back to India until her work contract ends, and also that she settles the amount owed to him. Even though sub agent James was recently arrested by police in Mangaluru, but sources reveal that only if the main agent Shabha Khan is arrested, chances of Jacintha returning back to India could be a bit early.

As reported in a national daily. Velita, daughter of Jacintha had received a call on August 23, in the afternoon from a nurse and was informed that her mother had been brought to the health centre by the Kafil’s family from Yanbu as she was suffering from a severe headache and weakness. Jacintha had complained that she was made to starve and was also beaten up by the Kafil’s family. She was groaning in pain and requested immediate help from the Indian Embassy to repatriate her back to India. But it seems like no one is listening to Jacintha’s repeated pleas to bring her back to India?

Arrogance. These people still strongly believe in slavery, and enslaving people.

Though there are cases where employers have treated their domestics well and very well, there are many instances when people were denied their basic rights and justice. Those kind of ruthless people should be dealt with a heavy hand by the Indian government, and there should be no compromise if they think they can hire Indian labour and then abuse them.
