‘Empowered To Serve’ 243 Students’ Council Members of St Aloysius PUC take Oath during Students’ Council Inauguration

Mangaluru: Like they say that Change in leadership is always good and better, and it was time for change in the Students’ Council at St Aloysius Pre-University College, Mangaluru- and the inauguration of the 2018-19 Students’ Council took place at the Loyola Hall. The programme began with invoking God’s blessings through a prayer song rendered by the college choir, followed by a welcome dance by the damsels of the college. The welcome address was delivered by Murali Krishna- Vice Principal of the College/Science Dept/also Council director, followed by the inauguration of the programme by lighting the traditional lamp.

Chief guest of the occasion, Dr Kripa Amar Alva- Chairperson of Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPC) lit the lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais namely- President of the programme Fr Denzil Lobo Sj- Former Rector, St Aloysius Institutions; Fr Melwin Mendonca Sj- Principal; Ms Charlotte D’souza- Vice Principal {Arts and Commerce}; Mural Krishna -Vice Principal {Science}, Fr John Lang Bosco Sj-Finance Officer; and Pradyumna Rai/Miss Mehek Pinto/Miss Joicy Pinto-the President/Secretary/Jt Secretary respectively of Students’ Council. Administering of the oath to these three Students’ Council leaders was done done by Fr Melwin Mendonca Sj, and later President of the Students’ Council Pradyumna administered the oath to the other 240 Council members- which was followed by the College Anthem by the Choir. The three student leaders were felicitated by the chief guest.

Addressing the students Fr Melwin Mendonca Sj said, ” Looking at all of you, I have a feeling that you all will be the leaders of this nation. You all have a good future, and for that you need to make best use of your college life and gain all the knowledge and experience to be a good leader. Looking at the 139 years history of this college, it has produced many great leaders who are serving our nation and also abroad. Similarly I know that many of you also will be great leaders of this country, and there is no doubt about it. You need to be good leaders not just in education, but also in sports, co-curricular activities and so on. Changes come when we are pro-active. Be a change in your society, be a change in your college. Motivate others, counsel your college mates if they need help. We should believe in servant leadership because it resonates with mind and spirit and because it works.”

“Everything counts—your life, family, work, beliefs and organizations. People count. Most of all, your love counts. I believe in servant leadership because it is rooted in the universal human impulse to serve. I believe in servant leadership because it works. We also need to care for the environment by keeping the college campus, classrooms etc litter-free, and follow this year’s World Environment theme as ‘ Beat Plastic Pollution’. I am happy about the CAUSE foundation in the college which has been serving and caring for the needy. Not just excelling in academics, you need to show compassion, love and care towards the needy. Once again I want to repeat that looking at you you are surely bound to become the great leaders of the nation. Let the Aloysian spirit live within you to make others life better. Wish you all success in your leadership work” added Fr Mendonca Sj.

In her inaugural address chief guest Dr Kripa Alva said, ” You are the leaders of making of this nation. Leadership is built within you, and not parachuted from above. There’s an age-old saying, ‘Winners don’t do different things. They do things differently,’ so similarly are the leaders. We need to identify our leadership.The nine qualities of leadership should be-Creativity; Communication; Character; Courage; Conviction; and Charisma; and Competency. Among all these qualities, communication is very important to reach greater heights, even though lack behind in your academic grades. Remember to be a leader is not a smooth-there will be hurdles and challenges, and you need to face them to succeed. We are in new India, where 65% is you. India needs you to make a change and make India great. And if you have confidence and commitment, you can make a change”.

In his presidential address Fr Denzil Lobo Sj said, ” I am happy to be back here after a span of two years to express my gratitude and compliments. You are all leaders now, and the going to be also the future leaders of this nation. Leadership is not about a title or a designation. It’s about impact, influence, innovation and inspiration. Impact involves getting results, influence is about spreading the passion you have for your work, and you have to inspire team mates and customers. Mahatma Gandhi had said, Be the change you want to see in the world’-If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. We need not wait to see what others do. You need step forward and inspire, motivate and lead- and bring a change and make a difference”.

The vote of thanks was rendered by Ms Charlotte D’souza, and the programme was compered by Miss Afran Khan, an II PUC student. Here are some key qualities that every good leader should possess, and learn to emphasize- Honesty; Delegate, Communication, Confidence, Commitment, Positive Attitude, Creativity, Intuition, Inspire, and Approach. Let your leadership be an inspiration to others. Let your leadership be showing concern towards others. Follow this thought provoking quote-“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. Be a great leader, serve the college and later the nation with pride and dignity.

And as an Alumni of my Alma mater-St Aloysius College, I extend my gratitude for making me what I am today. The love shown by the Jesuit priests of this institution and the caring and training given by the staff was indeed tremendous and worth during my college days here. At present we need good leaders, and the nation depends on you young leaders. You are all the cream of the society. Remember that once you exit of this college, you will still be proud to say that you are an Aloysian, and you will be respected by all. An Aloysian is always an Aloysian”.

“The energy, the faith, the devotion, the commitment which you bring to this endeavour will light your institution and all who serve it… and the glow from that light can truly light this nation. Best of luck from Team Mangalorean to the Students Council 2018-19 of St Aloysius PUC.
