England thump US 3-0 in football friendly
London: England’s national football team drubbed the US 3-0 in a football friendly match played at Wembley Stadium.
England will need to beat Croatia on Sunday to move into the UEFA NL final phase, reports Efe news.
In Thursday’s match, the goals were contributed by Jesse Lingard, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Callum Wilson, while the Three Lions’ beloved Wayne Rooney played in his 120th match with the team.
Rooney came onto the pitch before the opening whistle accompanied by his three children to receive a commemorative plaque. Although he did not manage to find the twine, the team’s all-time top scorer played for half an hour in his farewell match at Wembley and with the Three Lions to resounding cheers from his longtime fans every time he touched the ball.
The US squad, meanwhile, was completely outclassed in every area. Gareth Southgate’s English team was able to have their way with the Americans, who never posed any kind of threat.
Christian Pulisic, who plays for Borussia Dortmund, was on the field for just the second time for the US since the team failed to qualify for the Russia World Cup some 13 months ago.
But the 20-year-old striker never could seem to get anything going, perhaps because he never got the ball enough, being deployed wide to the right in the first half and wide to the left in the second.
Lingard got the Brits on the board first in the 26th minute, and Alexander-Arnold doubled their advantage just one minute later, while Wilson waited until the 77th minute to notch the final tally.
