Enrol Students under RTE in 2 Days – Pramod Madhwaraj

Manipal: “As 600 applications of students enrolled under RTE have been rejected, the Education Department should fill the vacant seats in two days,” ordered Pramod Madhwaraj, Minister for Fisheries, Sports, Youth Services and district minister in-charge. He was speaking at the Zilla Panchayat meeting held at Dr V S Acharya Hall, Rajathadri, Manipal here on June 24.

The Education Department in Udupi seems to have joined hands with private educational institutions to reject 600 applications and keep the seats vacant. The DDPI said that 1025 applications were received, of which 425 had been processed and students were admitted to schools while 600 applications were rejected due to the notification issued on the ward. Kota Srinivas Poojary said that the deputy commissioner has been given additional power to approve the applications by undermining the rules proposed in the notification. The minister ordered the DDPI to complete the admission process for the 600 vacant seats in 2 days and attach a compliance report.

ZP member Reshma Uday Shetty said that the contractor in charge of the Bola Kodi road has damaged the water pipeline connecting houses and a school, and that the PMGSY department was not effectively responding to the issue. Pramod Madhwaraj said that the contractor should have repaired the pipeline on grounds of humanity and he ordered the PMGSY official to repair the pipeline.

ZP member Hebri said that grains unfit for human consumption were being supplied to schools. THe ZP CEO replied that she has suspended the headmistress of Navunda School after complaints food being cooked using rotten grains, and also said that stern action would be taken against the responsible officials.

Chaitra Shanbaug, Vivek Giridhar Pai, Venkatesh Purnaik and Shashikanth, students who had scored the highest marks in the SSLC exams, were felicitated. A homage was also paid to the victims of the Trasi accident.

Udupi-Chikkamagaluru LS Constituency MP, Shobha Karandlaje said that the government should formulate a long-term policy for ensuring that children travel to schools in school buses. She also said that a short-term plan should be soon initiated in this regard.

MLA Gopal Poojary, MLC Pratapchandra Shetty, MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary, ZP President Dinker Babu, ZP Vice President Sheela K Shetty and others were present.
