Escaped Rape and Murder accused Arrested in Pernankila Forest
Manipal: on April 1, evening the Manipal police succeeded in arresting the rape and murder accused who had escaped from police custody on Sunday, March 31 while being taken to the Hiriyadka prison from the court.
As per the information received from locals, the police intensified their search operations in the Pernankila forest area and arrested Hanumanthappa Bassappa Kambali on April 1.
Hanumanthappa Bassappa, a native of Badami in Bagalkot district presently residing in Kaup, was arrested on Saturday, March 9 late night for rape and murder of a girl at Shivalli.
He was produced before the magistrate at his house and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. Hanumanthappa escaped when he was being shifted to the Hiriyadka jail.
Hanumanthappa had come in contact with the victim during the first week of March and had even assured her of getting a good job.
He then took her to a deserted area in Mudusagri where he sexually assaulted her. When the victim threatened to disclose the incident, the arrested strangulated the victim to death using her shawl. After the murder, Hanumanthappa was absconding.
