Evening Classes Focusing on Transgenders Should be Started – DCP Arungshu Giri

Mangaluru: The Karavali Lekhakiyara Vachakiyara Sangha in association with Parivarthan Charitable Trust and Antharika Gunamatta Khatri Kosha Kannada Vibhaga organized a University-level workshop on the life of Transgenders and their problems at Sudindra Hall, Canara Girls High School, Dongarakeri here on January 3.

The programme began with an invocation. President of KLVS Vijayalakshmi Bhat welcomed the gathering. Founder and Managing Trustee of Parivarthan Charitable Trust Violet Pereira briefed about Parivarthan and its activities. In her keynote address, Violet Pereira said, “Recently I read a newspaper cutting containing a statement from a gay person regarding transgenders was posted on Parivarthan WhatsApp group saying, “There are no problems from the Transgenders born in Dakshina Kannada but there are complaints of transgenders who have come to Mangaluru from other places”. This statement sends the wrong message to society. The transgender community is minuscule and if they themselves harass each other how will the society accept them. The actual transgenders are facing a lot of problems in Mangaluru because of a few people who want to exploit them. There is a need for change so that transgenders can also lead a normal life. The Parivarthan Charitable Trust supports transgenders and works towards bringing them to the mainstream”.

The progamme was inaugurated by the DCP Law and order Arunagshu Giri by lighting the traditional lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais.

Addressing the gathering Arungshu Giri said, “First of all I would like to congratulate Canara College, KLVS and Parivarthan Charitable Trust for organizing this special programme. Transgenders should be brought to the mainstream. Evening college should be started focusing on transgender. If the college takes the initiative to start employment-oriented classes they can get an opportunity to start their own business. Some children say that they would like to be identified as alternative gender. If the alternative gender option can be included in the application forms it will help such children. This is a good programme, I wish everyone all the very best”.

President of Parivarthan Charitable Trust Ramya Gowda said, “I would like to brief about LGBTIQ community. We transgenders are born as boys and gradually become girls. We transgenders suffer in our own homes. When we are born our parents feel happy but as we grow we are isolated and abandoned by our parents as well as society. We are forced to beg and involve ourselves in sex work for our livelihood. We too are considered for reservation, we can get a job and earn our livelihood. If any transgender commits a crime they should be punished. I was born in Hassan and now live in Mangaluru. Mangaluru has given me a lot, I feel proud to be a Mangalorean. If anyone gives us a job, we will be happy to work. Some of them say that transgenders don’t work, without providing us jobs please don’t say that they don’t work. If any transgender studies in your college do not discriminate or harass them. If we get an opportunity we can do many things. In Tamilnadu, a transgender has become a police inspector. One of our transgenders who contested from the DMK Party won the Gram Panchayat elections by 950 votes. Another transgender has become a Principal. Transgenders have many talents, let them get opportunities. I thank everyone and end my speech with a poem Baduku Badukal Bidi”.

Former MLA Shakuntala Shetty addressing the gathering said, “I have come here to take part in the programme. I would like to congratulate Violet Pereira for starting the Parivarthan Charitable Trust for the welfare of the Transgenders. This is the first in the history of Karnataka state, she is trying to transform the transgenders and I congratulate them. I had attended the Women and Child Welfare meeting when Jayamala was the president. I really feel sad seeing the transgenders suffer, they are neglected by their parents and the society even though it is not their mistake to be born as transgenders. Women, Physically challenged, backward class, minorities all have a reservation, likewise, transgenders also should get a reservation in every field which will facilitate them to lead a normal life. All transgender should be treated equally.”

Treasurer of Canara High School Association C A Vaman Kamath delivered the presidential address. Vaman Kamath said, “We cannot expect everything from the government. We as Indians should identify the problems of transgenders and solve them. Parivarthan Charitable trust is working hard to solve their problems. Once upon a time, the society was not at all considering transgenders. We have to interact with the transgenders and listen to their grievances.”

Secretary of KLVS Sikhalakshi Y Suvarna delivered the vote of thanks.
