Everyone must join hands to make Udupi First Garbage-free District in country – Pramod Madhwaraj
Udupi: The Udupi district aims to become the first garbage-free district of the county within a year, from the Gram Panchayat level to the Zilla panchayat all citizens should join hands for this mass movement said Pramod Madhwaraj, district minister in charge of the district.
He was speaking after inaugurating the workshop for local body members on the Swacch Udupi Mission at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Auditorium Manipal here on Monday, August 7.
Udupi District has been in the forefront in all fields including education and health compared to other districts in Karnataka. The Udupi district is well-known for quality education, healthcare and Banking sectors. In a recent survey of the Human Development Index, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts were found next only to Bengaluru. The law and order situation in Udupi district is a model for other districts of the state. Udupi is known for its lowest crime rate across the state. In fact, Udupi district has low infant mortality compared to the country’s average. This may be because of the medical facilities available in the district and the level of awareness among the people. The district has been in the forefront in all fields but the disposal of waste has been a big challenge for the district.
The Minister further said that collection, transportation and disposal of garbage have always been a headache for the local authorities. Some people throw the waste in public places and others just dump it in the rivers. The process of making Udupi a garbage-free district should begin from everyone’s homes. It is essential that both the rural and urban local bodies give priority in keeping the district clean by disposing of wet and dry waste in a scientific manner. He appealed to the general public to take responsibility and join hands for the management of waste in making Udupi district the cleanest district in the state. Under the able leadership of Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis training has been provided to the members and staff of the urban and local bodies and the SHGs on this matter. It was incumbent upon the elected representatives also to help in the drive to make Udupi a garbage-free district, he added.
Priyanka Mary Francis Deputy commissioner said that the members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) had received training in the scientific management of wet and dry waste from C. Srinivasan, Project Director, Indian Green Service, Vellore. They should now become soldiers in the Swacch Udupi Mission. They should work sincerely in this drive. The aim of imparting training to Self Help Groups (SHGs), volunteering organisations and local officials is to reduce waste generation and at the same time generate an income from selling waste. As community involvement is the most important aim of achieving any goal, local officials from 150 plus gram panchayats (GPs). Hence treating garbage as a resource and not as waste can considerably bring down the crisis, she added.
District in-charge secretary M Maheshwar Rao IAS, C Srinivasan, Project Director, Indian Green Service, Vellore, Meenakshi Madhava Bannanje president Udupi CMC, K T Balakrishna IPS, Superintendent of Police Udupi district and others were present.
Disposal of dry and wet garbage in a scientific manner is a concept that is not familiar to most of the world, and therefore Udipi District need be complemented for their researchful concept of getting rid of the garbage and keep the environment clean and tidy. Not a single Garbage Bin or Large Garbage Containers are seen installed anywhere in Udupi, and therefore people throw garbage (that is mainly packing material such as gutka pouches, chips packets, chocolate wrappers, ice-cream wrappers or boxes, etc. – all these one will find in plenty thrown in public places such as the 3 bus stand in Udupi).
